I had a list of 5 items I figured I would buy if they were available, but only two of them were — the other three had been ordered, and for two of them they'd gotten some copies in, but those had all sold out within the first hour while I was still blissfully fast asleep.

In case anyone is curious, the 5 items on my want-list were...

XTC, Live Boots: Live at Emerald City 1981 - SOLD OUT (of all six copies that had come in)
Suede, Coming Up at the BBC - GOT THE LAST ONE
Tommy Keene, Songs From the Film: The 1984 Reflection Sessions - the store ordered some, but none came in
April March (Not An April March), Villerville - GOT THE LAST ONE
Arcade Fire, Open Your Heart Or Die Trying - SOLD OUT ("about" ten copies, "immediately," they said)

So... not bad, actually. The XTC thingy will probably be available on CD via their online store soon enough, and I was mostly just curious about the two others. (Admittedly, I might well have tried to "flip" the Arcade Fire album on eBay, assuming my account there is still active. Haven't logged in there in quite a while. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been the only one...)

I had a short conversation with the guy who runs the store, and he was quite emphatic that nobody — including him — seems to have any idea on Friday as to what's going to actually sell out quickly on Saturday morning. Advance media coverage (like this article in Variety and this one in Rolling Stone) are useless as far as predicting what's going to sell out quickly and what's likely to still be available after, say, 4 hours or so. People walk in with lists that go for 2-3 pages, in some cases buy well over $1,000 worth of merchandise, and you'd better be prepared for some jostling and getting pushed out of the way.

Here's a Youtube video posted a few hours ago, in which some guy from outside of Seattle gets in his car at 3AM, heads into town for RSD, and while it's still dark out, gets in line behind 25 other people at a store called Silver Platters. They're actually giving the customers numbers and letting them in just a few at a time, to prevent the store from being mobbed. (Good idea!) At the 13:20 mark, you can clearly see the XTC Live at Emerald City record on the wall display at the second store he goes to, so... I guess I should have moved to Seattle instead of where I live now? (It's a nice town.) Thankfully it's just a live album, I don't get too worked up over those, even if it's them. Either way, I'm glad I went, if only for that vague feeling of nostalgia for record shopping the late 70s and early 80s. (These guys look like they enjoyed the vague feeling too.)

Rating: 🌻🌻🌻🌻 ( A Power Pop hidden gem that really shouldn't be considering how recognized The dB's are.)

• One of those super-groups before they even knew it, Sneakers in part consisted of Winston-Salem boys & massive Big Star fans Chris Stamey on guitar & vocals, Will Rigby on drums, & Mitch Easter contributing when & where where necessary. As Mitch himself explains, "... Sneakers is Chris’ baby. He wrote this batch of songs … great songs. He was playing an acoustic guitar and singing a lot, but the neck of the acoustic guitar was broken...so I played acoustic guitar on the session. One figures that somebody had to, what with Stamey’s guitar being broken and all. I’ve known Chris for a really long time, and whenever he asked me to get involved in things, I would do it."
• Released in 1976 on Stamey’s own label, Carnivorous Records, as a 7” vinyl EP
• Priced at a reasonable $1.98, the six-song EP sold about 3,500 copies.
• After seeing Television live (at Max's Kansas City I believe), Chris Stamey promptly dropped everything (including his studies at UNC) to move to NYC. In time he formed The dB's with former Sneakers band mate Will Rigby.

It's a thoroughly consistent album from start to finish, every song is potentially a highlight. The title track and, jet, are two of McCartney's best solo songs, but, let me roll it, is just as good as those two. Mamunia, is excellent, bluebird, is lovely, and, nineteen hundred and eighty-four, is great. In fact it's all great. Picasso's last words, is a song McCartney wrote after being challenged to write a song on the spot by Dustin Hoffman using those words. No words, the sole McCartney-Laine co-write on the record, is good, and, Mrs. Vanderbilt, is McCartney at his most catchy. For Your Own Special Sweetheart (1994) by Jawbox
I suppose I liked this album when I first bought it but now this just shows all the negative sides of emo, too much emo and no songs. An album quickly to be evacuated from my year chart.

And an album from my wishlist:

Viva La Muerte (1994) by Cobra Verde
After Death Of Samantha was disbanded, John Petkovic and Doug Gillard formed Cobra Verde and this is their first album from 1994. I must say I was disappointed by the quality of the first half of the album but the second half restored my confidence: like AMG states: combining the impact of punk with the urgency of early-'70s glam rock and good songs but I hope they're even gonna do better on their next albums. This one enters my year chart at the 66th rank.

More Martinu for my Prague Prep!

The Double Concerto was the first Martinů I ever heard, listening to WCRB out of Boston early in my Classical Journey. I was absolutely floored right from the get go. While I was still cutting my teeth on Beethoven, Brahms, and a little baroque counterpoint, this thing came out of left field and just blew me away. The high drama right from the first bar! The intensity; the anguish... you can imagine how a Czech composer might be feeling a little stress in 1938, and every bit of that comes out in this 20th century masterpiece. Amazingly, as intense as the opening Poco Allegro is, the Largo of the second movement starts out even more so. The third and final Allegro somehow manages to bring it all home, no easy feat at this point. I will literally never lose my wonder of this piece.

When I saw this disc at Tower Records, I just had to get it. Not only did it open with that incredible double concerto, the next piece is a Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra. I had decided early on in my Classical fandom that I loved string quartets (thank you FJH!). Now the idea of a concerto for a string quartet and orchestra and as opposed to a single instrument and orchestra really intrigued. Amazingly, even with unrealistically high expectations, this piece fulfilled that promise. It's a good deal lighter in mood; much of it a real joy, really, but still full of Martinů's quirky orchestration and unique harmonic taste. Even before I'd really explored the more accessible musical periods, Martinů was turning me into a 20th Century fanatic (along with his countryman Janacek).

The closing Sinfonia Concertante is also a much more upbeat piece. Comin in 1949, with WWII in the rearview mirror and before the Soviets would fully crush the Czech spirit, there is a gloriously positive mood and motion to this most wonderful 21 minute stretch.

Richard Hickox and the City of London Sinfonia do a remarkable job of wringing all the right emotions out of these pieces at the right time. The range of expression they bring here is quite admirable. A glorious disc this is from end to end.

As you may have noticed, several images were no longer loading on my Greatest Paintings, Sculpture, Architecture list, “Images and Links” section just below the main listing (first page of the thread).

This requires some upkeep, clean-up from time to time.

I am systematically going through the whole damn thing and making the sets of images per work a bit more concise.

For architecture/scultpure, means less photos per, but still prominent, usually very HQ ones, and still enough to give one an immediate taste of the works’ content and even physical traversal.

So far I have completed 7.8-9.9/10 works — all of them load, and faster, more efficiently than before.

I’ll be getting all the rest, 7.3-7.7 done too, as rapidly as I can (much more time consuming than it ever seems at first!)

After this clean up, I intend to add all the newer entries with accompanying images and artist pages.

The page was getting too bogged down before by all the loading and failed loading, making new additions a chore. Now, getting much easier… another reason for this order of things…

There are most likely more ratings changes coming too.

You may have noticed I’ve been revisiting and basically culminating a survey of the main body of the greatest Gothic Architecture. This has been very intentional and now one can basically see what I’ve determined of these (thus far, ratings and rankings not final) between 7.3s all the way up to the newest 8.8/10. Still more to add including some obvious, classic ones (Rouen for instance), coming soon as well.

Yeah, Chaise Longue is the last thing I remember from Wet Leg, had no clue what they had been up to lately. I didn't find magnetout as cool as their signature song, vibed more with Today Might Be The Hit.

I almost nominated an Anna von Hausswolff song -namely Struggle With The Beast- myself, so it's a no-brainer for me. Great song, great album.
