March 2013 site update

BEA currently takes a lot of testing before each release, but this also means there's simply not enough time left in each month to make any major changes. With this in mind, BEA will now revert to a bi-monthly release cycle to enable bigger releases to occur (less updates, but more functionality each time).

I'd also like to ask people again this month to concentrate more on discussing music, and try and keep threads on topic. Some of the content posted this month is not focused on music, and would be more at home on Facebook or somewhere else. Please respect other members and let's try and improve the quality of debate.

Album/chart of the day history
This month, a new page has been added to BEA which shows the history of the album, world album and chart of the day. You can filter the page to show any of the current categories and go back to when this first started. Original thread (from tbakeman).

Other changes

Increased the edit 'lock' period for items currently being edited to 30 minutes (from 15) to better avoid edit clashes. Also, added an extra check (before an item is saved) to see if an item is currently locked by somebody else (a save will no longer happen if an item is being edited elsewhere). Increased the minimum number of ratings for an item to qualify for the top-rated charts to 20. Original thread (from Jabapac).
Increased the length of rank notes to 2,048 characters (& for wish list notes as well) Original thread (from Borve Baunehoj)
Fixed 'No chart found' sometimes appearing in the list of similar charts
Highlight other charts by the same user within the list of similar charts. Original thread (from gtroda)
Increased the maximum length of aggregated year and decade charts to 1,000 albums (to make 'treasure hunting' a bit easier). Original thread & here (from sethmadsen & martintho).
Show a *next* level teaser message on user charts page.
Improved the relevancy of search results from the site masthead.
You can now sort by price to help find the cheapest deal for a particular CD or MP3 (try this out for any item from the Shop page).
Added a helpful/unhelpful vote breakdown for member comments. Original thread (from Behrus58).
Added an 'average rating' column to CSV exports.
Now show the country in band search results & for album of the day
'Newly added albums' page now loads a lot faster
Fixed an issue where URLs containing brackets could cause blank forum posts e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Gear_Solid_(film)
Fixed an issue where long strings of characters could break the forum layout (any word of over 90 characters is now automatically broken)
Fixed an issue where the code which validated the maximum image size in a user signature could be bypassed (the max image size is 400 x 150 pixels)

Happy new year to everybody, and sorry for the lack of a January update. There have been some really great ideas suggested recently in the forums, and by email, so please keep them coming. Apologies for not being able to implement these as as quickly as I'd like, and thank you for your patience in the interim. Most people will know here, I also have a pesky day job which sometimes gets in the way of BEA, but I will work on implementing the back log once my day job calms down a bit.

BEA is a music site (& that's why most people register), so I'd like to ask people to concentrate more on discussing music, and keep threads on topic. Some people here might not mind this, but new members are attracted to the site because of the music, but can be put off from posting when they see some of the stuff here; and some of the existing members feel unable to contribute (or don't want to) because they don't want to interact on that level. The site rules are there for a reason, and the moderators and myself are here to help create an environment where everybody can be involved.

This month's update mainly contains bug fixes, but next month will see some bigger changes...

Changes

Forum usage statistics are now shown on user profile pages. Original thread (from RFNAPLES).
Added average rating statistics for each user and a rating distribution graph to the user ratings tab.
Fixed an issue where a customise overall chart CSV file contained an incorrect sort order. Original thread (from RFNAPLES).
Fixed a bug with the customise overall chart functionality where certain criteria could be ignored. Original thread (from Jabapac).
Fixed an issue where users couldn't post URLs on the forums even though they were Level 2.
Fixed an issue where new comments were not shown immediately on track pages.
URLs on the forums are now auto-shortened if they are more than x characters (peviously, they could stretch the forum layout).
Fixed a bug to prevent duplicate comments on the object pages.
Added a warning on the object pages to warn people against copying/pasting reviews from other websites. At some stage in the future BEA might show these separately, but for the time being these don't belong in member comments (especially if they are not the author's own work).
...Lots more smaller fixes and improvements!

December 2012 site update

December is usually the busiest time of year for BEA, as people hunt for end of year lists, so this update is a little bit early to ensure everything has settled in before the crowds arrive. (There'll be another (smaller) update before Christmas to wrap up 2012).

Server upgrade
BEA's hosting was upgraded (again) at the start of November, and was the third upgrade this year! The latest upgrade will provide BEA with performance improvements at peak times, and add a bit of head-room over the busy end of year period. Traffic volumes are already at record levels, and everything is bearing up fairly well so far.

End of year lists
We're approaching the time of year when end of years lists will start to crop up everywhere, and we have the possibility of combining those lists into the 2012 chart here. The proposed method of submitting these lists is via custom charts. If a custom chart is a copy from a recognised source, you can apply to get this chart seen as 'recognised' and it will then count towards the overall rankings. To do this, visit the admin page for the chart, and submit a data correction. Charts from recognised sources must not themselves be aggregate lists. Any chart that is promoted, will no longer appear as being from your account, but will be credited as being from the original source.

Year and decade chart composition
Inspired by the best year tournament, a summary has been added to each decade page which lists the top-ranked album & total rank points for each year, and a chart composition has also been added. 1967 is currently ranked the best year on BEA, and 1981 the worst. The best ranked decade on BEA is a closely fought contest between 1970s, 1990s and 2000s (with the 1970s slightly edging it). Original thread (from cartoken).

Customising the overall chart
You can now create a customised version of the overall chart using a choice of four different metrics. You are able to include charts based on member level, or charts having a minimum average rating. Original thread (from lethalnezzle).

MP3 previews
You now see MP3 previews in each chart without being logged out of the site. This setting is turned off by default for existing users, but it can be switched on from your profile page. Original thread (from RFNAPLES).

Other changes

To help highlight the best charts of each type, you can now sort the list of charts by their average rating.
You can now sort each track list by the number of ratings that each track has received. Original thread (from thejoj96).
Now show rating and comment stats for each chart on the My Charts page. Original thread (from DLGGLD).
Fixed an issue with the latest forum posts RSS feed character encoding
Fixed an issue where a collection composition could still be visible even if the collection was marked as private.
Fixed an issue where chart comments were incorrectly hidden for a subset of users.
Fixed an issue displaying historical charts for users with a year/month/day date format preference.
Fixed an issue on the search page where no search results were displayed for search terms containing apostrophes or foreign characters.
Now show whether an album is a compilation on each album page (and on the Newly Added Albums screen).
Fixed top-rated songs/bands/charts URLs not landing correctly.
Fixed an issue with the band statistics pagination not keeping the child acts filter.
Fixed an issue where moderator deletes were incorrectly indicated with a cross.
Added help text to the admin album screen for the compilation field.
Added a decade composition for custom charts. Original thread (from RFNAPLES).
Fixed an issue where albums could be listed as being in your favourites if they appeared in your chart(s) (the behaviour was changed a couple of months ago, but parts of the site were still using the old code).
Fixed a bug where rank movements were not shown if you sorted the overall chart with an active historical date filter.
Fixed a bug where albums containing slash characters could not be added to member charts (reported by email).
Added a tweak to disallow YouTube videos and oversized images in forum signatures - these slow down the loading of pages and make the forums more difficult to read (especially on mobile devices) (the maximum size for images is now 400x150 pixels).
'Ignored' forum posts & comments are now a little more discrete (reported by PM).

Server upgrade
The last two months have been record months on BEA in terms of visitor volumes (which is great!), but at peak times BEA is now sometimes running at full capacity. To alleviate some strain, a server is scheduled to be upgraded next Tuesday 7th November at 7am EDT. There should be minimal downtime during the upgrade (30 minutes at most) and it will be done during a quiet time of day (for most people). However, some downtime is to be expected, as BEA won't be able to serve traffic while the upgrade is in progress. A reminder message will be posted nearer the time.

Custom charts
Custom charts are about to go live for Level 7 users. Custom charts allow you can add any type of album chart that you like, of up to 100 entries, but unlike the other types of chart, these charts do not count towards the overall rankings. To be consistent with the rest of the site, albums in these charts need to be official releases, full length, and the original version.

Improved localisation
Dates and times are now displayed in your preferred date format across the site, and are localised to your time zone. It's also now a bit easier to choose a preferred date format from your profile page (there's a dropdown list to choose from). The historical chart functionality on the overall chart and year/decade charts will obey and use your preferred date format. You can also choose a country to help localise some content for your region (if the auto-detection is not correct for your IP address, or if you are living abroad and want the content to be relevant for your 'home' country, rather than the country you are living in). This is an internal setting and will not be shown publicly, and is separate to the flag you can pick for your user profile.

Charts list
A few improvements & fixes have been made to 'The Charts' page. BEA now displays five charts per page (instead of three), we show the updated (& created) dates for each chart, & have fixed an issue with the pagination getting mangled when the list of charts was filtered by chart type. Other changes

Fixed an issue where viewing a year, decade or overall chart 'back in time' only worked for the first page of the chart (& not for subsequent pages). (Original thread)
Fixed a caching issue where a track's average rating could sometimes be different on an album's track-listing compared to its individual track page. (Original thread)
White space is now (re-)honoured in object comments. (Original thread)
The filters on the newly added albums/bands pages no longer include items flagged as 'suspect'.
Fixed a bug on the 'My Chart' page where the wrong custom chart could be deleted
Avatars are now displayed in the member list
Fields are no longer displayed on user profiles where the user response is blank
Added an additional strikethrough tag for formatting text on the forums
The forums 'Insert BEA link' BBCode functionality now inserts the link where the caret is
Added a 'percentage of total posts' metric to the forum & topic posters pages

I'm pleased to welcome 19loveless91 & ShaneSpear to the moderator team. I'm sure most people will appreciate a few more people helping out, especially with the busiest time of year fast approaching. These are both members who have contributed greatly to the site already, and will help provide more coverage across different time-zones. There are now seven people in the mod team (3 based in America, 3 in Europe, 1 in Australia).

Custom charts (previously known as 'fun charts')
The ability to add a custom chart has now been added to the site, and is currently being tested by a small pilot user group. Custom charts allow you to add any type of album chart that you like, of up to 100 entries, but unlike the other types of chart, these charts do not count towards the overall rankings. To be consistent with the rest of the site, entries in these charts need to be official releases, full length, and the original release.

Compilation albums
A common query received at BEA is for the ability to exclude compilation albums, or tracks appearing on compilation albums, from the top-rated chart. For example, songs which were not released in a particular decade might still appear in the top-rated chart for that decade simply because they could appear on a compilation album (e.g. a box-set, 'retrospective' etc) which might have been released much later than the original track.

A filter has been added to the top-rated album & song charts to enable you to include or exclude compilations from those charts. If you spot any albums that are currently not flagged correctly, you can update them via the admin page for each relevant album. The data needs updating retrospectively for all of the existing albums on the site, so please be patient as the data will not be correct from the outset.

Rank score calculation for current year & decade charts
Charts updated early in the current year or decade will likely be missing some albums which were not available to choose from at the time the chart was created and therefore entries in these charts will have less competition for places than a chart created towards the end of the relevant time period. Therefore, the elapsed number of days within the current year (or decade) that had passed when the chart was last updated will now be taken into consideration when calculating the points for each entry in the current year or decade chart.

In simple terms, charts updated later on in a year or decade will now be worth slightly more points than a chart created early on. This change only affects the current year chart for 2012 & the decade chart for the 2010s. Retrospective charts are not affected. (Original thread)

Year and decade chart history
In the same way that you can currently view the overall chart at a point in time, the same functionality has now been incorporated into year and decade pages. For example, if you want to see how the decade chart for the 2000s looked on 31st December 2000 compared to how it is today, this is the tool to find out. (Original thread)

Other fixes and improvements:

Times are now displayed (across the whole site) taking into account your local timezone. You can adjust your timezone from your profile page.
Albums not appearing in any charts are now displayed across the site (instead of being hidden from view)
Before a chart is saved, BEA will now check for some rare conditions which previously caused some charts to not save correctly.
Fixed a bug where if you clicked to view a comment under your viewing threshold, the comment would not be displayed. (Original thread)
Fixed an issue on the forums with the duplicate subject check sometimes not allowing to be overridden.
Incorporated a top album/song feed from Amazon in place of iTunes for those people that prefer shopping there. (Original thread)
Included in the album of the day is now a link for people who want to buy the highlighted album.

Lots more minor fixes and improvements.

Apologies for the seeming lack of activity over the past two or three months. Things *are* happening in the background. The servers have now been upgraded which should allow the site to cope with the increase in traffic that BEA gets during the final third of each year, and will also allow the site to scale into 2013. Apologies for the downtime while the servers were upgraded.

The next item on the roadmap will be 'fun charts'. Fun charts will allow you to add any type of album chart of up to 100 entries, but unlike the other types of chart, these charts will not count towards the overall rankings.

Favourite albums

You can now filter and see a breakdown of the albums in your collection, listened and favourites by year, decade, band and nationality.

Moderation system

Apologies for the downtime over the past day. The server upgrade went wrong, and the database got corrupted and had to be repaired. Hopefully, the site is now back to normal, but if anybody spots any problems, please let us know in the suggestions forum. The upgrade has now been re-scheduled for next Tuesday.

May 2012 site update: Year charts now released!

Year charts
Year charts are now live for Level 6 users. 'Year' charts will contribute 5% of a chart's normal weight towards the overall rankings. A discussion on the scoring system can be found here.

In a year chart, you can only pick from albums released in the relevant year. You can still add albums to your list that are not already on the site, but if they are subsequently found to be released in the 'wrong' year, they will not contribute towards the rankings. (N.B. BEA uses the original year of release for each album, so you need to be aware that any albums that you add to your year charts are not re-releases of older albums, and the BEA year of release will be final (if BEA have this wrong, let us know and it will be corrected).

Display of IP addresses
Although somebody's IP address cannot identify anybody directly, it could be used in conjunction with other personal data to narrow down the possibilities. Therefore, BEA will now mask from view the first two octets of each IP address. Entire IP addresses can still be seen by data moderators (e.g. to help identify anybody trying to 'game' the site); but to increase member privacy, whole IP addresses will no longer be visible to everybody else.

'New additions' threshold
To help stop the admin area of the site being overloaded with new albums, users will no longer be able to add more than 40 'new' albums to the site within a three day period (unless they help out with data moderation, in which case, editing will be automatically re-enabled). You can still make unlimited changes to your charts if the number of 'new' albums falls under this threshold, so most people will be unaffected. (A 'new' album is one that is not already on BEA.)

Comment votes
An option has been added to neutralise your comment vote on the individual album, band and chart pages.

April 2012 site update: Year charts released soon!

March was a very important month for the site. BEA has now upgraded to much more powerful servers which will allow the site to expand with new features, and better cope with increased traffic volumes. Moving to bigger servers this early in the year was a little unplanned, and has shifted the roadmap back by about a month, but hopefully progress will speed up now that the migration has happened.

Year charts
Year charts have just been released for testing, and will soon be available to Level 6 members. Year charts will be limited to 50 entries, and a top-placed album will contribute a maximum of 5 points to the overall rankings.

Filter and sort the list of charts
To better navigate the increased volume of charts on the site, you are now able to filter the list of charts by source (user or recognised list) and/or by chart type. You can also sort the list by date to more easily see recently added or updated charts.

Filter and sort the rankings for each album
On each album page, you can now filter the rankings to show overall, decade or year chart appearances. You can also sort each column in the rankings table to view the rankings by age, the ranking within each chart, and the rank points awarded from each chart.

If you'd like to support BEA, you can do so in any of the following ways:

Link to BEA from other websites. Talk about us on other websites, create a buzz and get people to check us out (but be careful not to do this in a spammy way!)

Routine maintenance

Just bringing the forums down for an hour or so, while a maintenance job is run. Once it's finished, it should result in a performance improvement across the site. Apologies for the inconvenience, but the rest of the site should function normally in the meantime.
