I've actually always appreciated the grammys. Many times, the best album of the year (in my opinion) is at least nominated. Look recently- Viva la Vida, Back to Black, American Idiot, How to Dismantle...

This year's best album was entirely passed over by everyone. Has anybody heard of Light by Matisyahu? It's fantastic. Look it up sometime.

I find it funny that the Oscars are having the opposite problem, they have the high respect of the film community, but weren't able to reel in viewers. This caused them to add 5 extra best picture nominees this year. This allowed the more populist movies District 9 and The Blind Slide (blegh), along with the obvious shoo-in (even if there were 5) Avatar. I think the Grammys should consider the opposite technique. Have 3 populist nominees (This year it should have been Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga/ and or the Black Eyed Peas), but also have critics vote on some of the slots (3 or 4 of them), due to the bizarre eligibility rules (which is something they also need to address), Dear Science by Tv on the Radio seems like the obvious critical pick. Then, both sides of the musical spectrum would represented. More likely, however, is the awards show simply dying, due to people not watching because the bland offering the Grammys dish out doesn't match their taste.

I prefer opinionated, but call it what you want. At least I don't let society determine what I listen to, or pay attention to, or hold in high regard, or openly revere in a public forum, such as this web site.

When one looks at influentialness (the true measure of greatness?), the criteria that Purple addressed, the Grammy's is still a sad state of affairs from a serious music fan's perspective.

I hate to end an argument, but really (to start a new one), Taylor Swift isn't going to have any influence over music ten years from now; influence that the likes of the Velvets and Joy Division and countless unaccounted (except in small circles) others have had. The Grammies, like the Oscars (for sake of relation to another recent award show) pick acts that are currently popular and readily identified with fame; they do not pick truly artistic acts (or films) which actually end up having more influence several years after they were made... (Who the fuck remembers Crash, or MTV Unplugged: Tony Bennet?). So the message is: THE GRAMMIES ARE BUNK!!!

Recording Academy voting members are professionals with creative or technical credits on six commercially released tracks (or their equivalent). These may include vocalists, conductors, songwriters, composers, engineers, producers, instrumentalists, arrangers, art directors, album notes writers, narrators, and music video artists and technicians. Record companies do not vote.

Special Nominating Committees
In craft and other specialized categories, final nominations are determined by national nomination review committees comprised of voting members from all of The Academy's Chapter cities.

The Emmys changed their process in 2006 to break the stranglehold that the major networks had on the nomination process. With the change they opened the door to cable shows which as we all know have had significant success since then at getting to the podium because of the change. If the Grammys changed their nomination process the playing field could open up to many worthy independent artists who are currently being shut out. Also, my understanding of the Grammys is that most of the voters are not performing artists.

"The Producers and Engineers Wing (P&E Wing) is a part of the academy made up of producers, engineers, mixers, and other technically involved professionals. It is comprised of almost 6,000 members. The producers and Engineers wing addresses various aspects of issues facing the recording profession. They also support music and recording arts education. The P&E Wing also advocates for the use of professional usage of recording technology as well as the preservation of recordings. The members of this division make up a large portion of those who vote on the Grammy Awards each year."

And how many prime-time TV shows are there in a given year?

The GRAMMY Awards take submissions from members and companies. An expert panel determines the correct category of the submissions. The voting members choose the top 5 in each category. The voting members again choose the winners by plurality from among the top 5. It works for them.

You may continue to choose to disagree with the results, but they are the results of a ballot of professional members.

The Emmy Awards have also gone to a committee or panel to finalize the nominees list. However, they do go to the general membership first.

"The prime-time Emmys hope to veer away from rounding up the usual suspects by having a blue-ribbon panel determine the nominees after reviewing tapes from the top 10 to 15 vote-getters. Under the revised rules, panels will pick the five nominees for comedy and drama series from 10 front-runners as decided by a vote of the academy's general membership. Acting nominees will be chosen by a panel from among the top vote-getters – 15, in this instance. Previously, leading vote-getters in the general vote were the final nominees."

The Tonys manage to do it successfully. "The awards are jointly administered by the American Theater Wing and the League of American Theaters and Producers. A special nominating committee made up of 27 to 30 members nominates four candidates for each category."

Where do you find that non-partisan robotic committee? Bet we would still disagree unless all those "qualified" people were on our list. The voters are all professional members of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States with credentials. It is their award and judged by the number of artists present and the number of people watching, I would say it is a pretty big thing.

Condsidering Amazon lists 2,494,693 titles I don't think being in the top 5,800 is bad. Remember, every album in the Best Ever Albums database appears on at least one chart of a member or "recognized" chart.

Therein lies the problem. Nominees should be selected by a nonpartisan qualified committee.
