Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches by Happy Mondays

Not sure if it's their best (always had a soft spot for the debut, though I think this has aged better than Bummed), but it's fantastic either way. It's sleazy and might not have one even half-original idea in its head, but it's also proper playful and seriously infectious. Banger after banger after banger. A cool, funky tonic to The Stone Roses '60s revivalism. The house elements are also integrated extremely naturally here by Oakenfold and Osborne, to the point where this should probably sit right next to Screamadelica in terms of successful indie/dance hybrids, though I wouldn't mind if this album made a few more concessions to the electronic world. There's something about it that still feels pretty conservative. Oh well, it's certainly not Shaun Ryder.

Barafundle by Gorky's Zygotic Mynci

Edit: Excellent psychedelic folk from the 90's.

Just finished...

Cut by The Slits

Now onto...

Remember by Doll By Doll

Doll By Doll were a heart-on-sleeve, sort-of proto-Replacements/Hold Steady, raunchy rock'n'roll band. At the time of punk their music didn't really fit in. I guess they take their musical cues from The Velvets or The Doors (maybe), with a clean glam-rock stomp and some pub rock R'n'B guitar licks thrown in for good measure. I dunno, apparently they were amazing live but on record they seem sort of tame. I've heard this album before, and their self-titled, but nothing stuck. Figured I'd go back and see if I could jog my memory. Pretty cool I guess, but nothing I haven't heard a thousand times before. Leven's voice is fucking beautiful though. Saw him live a handful of times before he passed away, and he never lost that voice. Some deep, soulful, Scottish rock'n'roll warble. This is cool anyway. They're a band I could see Romanelli liking.
