Ah, I'd written something for "XXX albums to listen to before the idea died down", and I'm lazy, and it wasn't very good anyway.

Whatever, splendid album, her best, basically it's tamed compared to her previous efforts, but in a nice, tense, emotional kind of tamey way. One of the best albums of the past decade for sure.

This is probably the last Cat Power album I loved. Moon Pix is also right up there as a personal favorite. Lately I hear her early records as a kind of female answer to Red House Painters if that makes any sense.

I think she meant them as an answer to Smog. She was obsessed with Billy Callahan. (She's completely crazy by the way. Seeing her in concert was always an interesting experience. Half the time she'd meltdown. It was almost like performance art, really. At least back in the 90s.) But good call. Red House Painters and Smog have a similar vibe.

Good call. I can definitely see the Smog/Callahan connection with her sound back then.

Never caught her back then, but I remember when the stage fright was being talked about regularly

I love this album, one of my favorite singer-songwriter albums.
