From you who wrote a great article about country blues, this is astounding.
But I'm willing to just face the music and dance: how influential to blues do you think Jack White was?

Well, not influential or important in that regard (as in "ive radically changed blues and others follow in my footsteps") But, really, the basic blues form has remained just about unchanged for a very long time. If i say Buddy Guy, Hubert Sumlin, Eric Clapton, SRV, etc were important to the development and existence of blues it is more in regards to where they took it, how they popularized it and mastered and perfected it. Not so much how they altered or influenced and changed it at a basic level. Jack White is no different in a way. He took this very old and very pure form of blues from the likes of Som House and he just played it in a rabid and wicked and loud way. And he also took other very old styles of blues that may be associated with the Blind Willie McTells and Albert Collinss and Hound Dog Taylors and Elmore Jamess of the past and modernized it slightly by playing it louder or faster or mixing it with garage rock and gritty punk etc. his blues tracks are stunning and absolutely invigorating and I feel he had a HUGELY important influence on keeping old deep blues relevant and alive through the 2000s.
Like for me, personally, after hearing the White Stripes rendition of "Death Letter Blues" I went and learned everything I could about Son house. Same with the first time I heard the Stripes version of "Southern Can Is Mine" I went and absorbed soooo much blind Willie McTell. Etc.
He had a similar relationship to the deep blues that Captain Beefheart did and others who kept it alive and part of the modern, "hip"and relatively un-blues based music they were associated with.
I'm not saying he was the first to do this, Gun Club, Flat Duo Jets, and many others had done something similar 10 or 20 years earlier. But they didn't have as far reaching and popular and influential an influence on da kids as the Stripes did.
Jack White is really one of my heroes. _________________ -Ryan
