I completely disagree that what EVH does is just mindless shredding. I've heard a lot of mindless shredding, some Yngwie Malmsteen tunes come to mind, but what EVH does is shredding with a purpose. Yes, I would say we can't judge these guitarists SOLELY on technical ability, there's more to it, but we would be doing all of them a major disservice if we approached it saying "Ew Van Halen's music sucks fuck that guy" without even attempting to put our biases aside. _________________ 2023 Chart

Sheesh! You got yourself all excited about it. I'd just relax. And yeah, van halen is pretty great. It's just good fun. Based off your super serious response to everything here it seems you aren't into the pure party fun of VH or EVH.

I don't like what Van Halen influenced much, and it's a style that, to me, thankfully did not endure. Twas the real beginning of the end of the guitar solo, IMO.

I would say though that when we're evaluating guitarists, we do have to attempt to put our biases to their band aside. We're looking at the guitarist, not necessarily the band. This wasn't "Whose the better band? Van Halen or Dinosaur Jr?" because that's an entirely different discussion. This was, who is the better guitarist, EVH or J Mascis?
