I suppose the top records of metal for the year have a bit of variance for me, though I did focus on it this year alongside my usual interests. I’ll list my top list here in no specific order:

Aenaon – Extance
Agalloch – The Serpent & the Sphere
Arkona – Yav
Dead Congregation – Promulgation of the Fall
Disforia – The Age of Ether
Elvenking – The Pagan Manifesto
Epitimia – (Un)reality
Equilibrium – Erdentempel
Evergrey – Hymns for the Broken
Falconer – Black Moon Rising
Idylls – Prayer for Terrene
Ifing – Against This Weald
Inanimate Existence – A Never-Ending Cycle of Atonement
Mayan – Antagonise
Morbus Chron – Sweven
Phillippe Luttun – The Taste of Wormwood
Sinbreed – Shadows
Stormwarrior – Thunder & Steele
Tengger Cavalry – Ancient Call
Thou – Heathen
Threshold – For the Journey
Thyrien – Hymns of Mortals, Songs from the North
Triptykon – Melana Chasmata
Vallenfyre – Splinters
Vanden Plas – Chronicles of the Immortals, Netherworld (Path 1)
Vanishing Point – Distant is the Sun
Woods of Desolation – As the Stars

Really? Even if you didn't like Centipede Hz(Which is crazy, there's amazing stuff on there) we still got Tomboy, Down There, ODDSAC, Transverse Temporal Gyrus, The KEEP Cassette mixtape, Enter The Slasher House, Honeycomb/Gotham and a couple other stray singles. There's no lack of great material.

Apart from Centipede Hz, which I'm not even that fond of, I don't think any of those releases are 'great' material. Especially compared to what they released between 2004-2009.

Yeah, I'm with Hayden on this one, only one of those I really love is Tomboy. Panda Bear is really the spark keeping Anco alive right now, not much of what Avey has done lately really has been astounding or interesting.

But we got Grim Reaper, and it's great.

My top pick from this year has to be St. Vincent and her eponymous album. Like her previous (strange mercy) but more intense and raw than its predecessor.

Parquet courts are also one of my favourites- they have some new stuff out this year

Because I need the help for space, I'm including metalcore/post-hardcore and etc. Not including Mitau, though, I've seen it described as "post-metalcore" but it's really just post-rock IMO.

1 Waldeinsamkeit by Sisilisko (they call themselves "Doom Folk Rock" or "Doom Metal Folk". IDK)
2 100 Onces by 100 Onces (math rock, instrumental metal)
3 Rooms of the House by La Dispute (post-hardcore/metalcore)
4 Special Victim by Future Death ("metal-goes-to-the-candy-shop", whatever that means)
5 Antemasque by Antemasque ("jazz-metal" I think of this as hard rock but I don't well know, I google these things)
6 Hyperion by Dirge ("Industrial Sludge Metal")
7 Jaded & Faded by Cerebral Ballzy (think of this as Hardcore Punk, but I've seen it described as "speed metal")
8 No Peace by Trash Talk (they say "hardcore hip-hop", but I don't even begin to hear that)

That's all the metal I've heard this year, and I've only REALLY loved the 1st 2, and even then I don't really think of Waldeinsamkeit as all too metal.

So I'd say if you're gonna check one out, make it

La Dispute hasn't written metalcore in like eight years, though. More grounded in emotive hardcore and have been for years. /semantics

Yeah it's post-hardcore-ish at this point, I'm going off others' genre choices. Oh, and you would maybe love 100 Onces, btw.

So there's a new Black To Comm album coming out in two weeks but the label put it all up on soundcloud. Still processing it but I think it's going to get put up pretty high on my chart and basically cements this year as my favorite of the decade so far. If you're unfamiliar it's sort of ambient but not really, but if you're jamming on contemporary stuff that sits around that ambient term then you should really check this.
