American Songwriter released a pretty cool year end list. I usually end up picking five or six decent recs from them a year.

So the new Childish Gambino is weird as shit.

Honestly, at this point, I think Donald Glover is getting so involved with himself that all is music feels entirely self-indulgent at this point.

I mean, the album isn't bad, it's just trying too hard

The only track that I've heard off of it is Redbone, and I thought it was pretty cool. It reminded me nothing of his previous work, mostly because he doesn't have a verse on it, but it's a decent track.

I just finished the album. It's not what I expected, but it's alright. Feels a bit self-indulgent and contrived, like he's trying too hard to be "artsy", but it's ok. It entirely abandons hip-hop for soul/R&B, which isn't necessarily bad, just not what I thought it'd be.

I love it. Surprise album that's one of my favorites of the year.

I'm not adding Keith Rowe - The Room Extended to the database yet because I'm not sure how to enter the tracklisting until I see the packaging, but I'm pretty confident it's my aoty

also the other recent erstwhiles are leaked on soulseek now, graham lambkin and michael pisaro. Everyone, I don't care what you're into. This Michael Pisaro thing, The Earth And The Sky, you should listen to it. It's almost four hours of really minimal piano stuff but it's so good and of everything I've heard this year, it's the thing I think would be best to recommend to just anyone. You, reading this, go download it.

you probably mentioned it already, but as far as Erstwhile releases, Taku Unami / Devin DiSanto is great, too, and a lot more "active" in its presentation than a lot of Erstwhile stuff. possibly recommendable to a wider array than the typical Erstwhile release, though it has pervasive eccentricities

yes that one is great, DiSanto seems to have a really great approach to things judging by this and Three Exercises, and I'd agree that it makes for something a bit more accessible (relatively).

Piano Sonatas And String Quartets 1 by ...Rădulescu

String Quartet No. 5 off of this is one of the unmissable classical performances of this year, maybe ever. But I'm a Radulescu fanboy. The Piano Sonatas are decent, and I'm excited to see if they get more interesting with subsequent releases in this series (meant to release all his SQs and Piano Sonatas eventually), but get this for the meat.

This is going to sound weird, especially coming from me, but I think it's still considered a 2017 release. The official 'release' is January 13th I think.

Looking forward to giving it a listen sometime soon.

And Merry Christmas to all Smile
