JOSweetheart- Shake it Off (Taylor Swift)
This song would a lot more effective if she didn't sing it all, and really did just "shake it off" |
In my opinion, she should be thankful for the attention no matter how good or how bad it is. To me, what she gets is better than nothing at all.
God bless you and Taylor always!!!

Quote: | Personally, as a white guy, I can't relate to this getto slang at all. Personally, I find it a turn-off whenever I hear the ever-recurring word 'nigga' or a sentence like 'my dick is big', yet these lyrics are interpreted as something deep and politically conscious and whatnot. Come again? Okay, that was completely out of context and not very representative of the album's lyrics and themes, but still. And musically: albums like this always end up sounding after a couple of minutes like a monotonous stream of spitting rappers rambling on as fast as they can over decent enough atmosphere-providing samples, but for the most part just lacks anything remotely melodic and musically memorable. This album is yet another instance of all that's described above, yet currently being heralded as a 'masterpiece'. Again, I'm just baffled! Why oh why do people like this stuff?
|
Quote: | eriously I'm tired of people not giving hip hop a chance because of the n-word or because of lines like "my dick is big". If you don't like the music that's fine. If you're too lazy to try and understand black vernacular that's fine. But don't claim that this album could not possibly be deep or conscious because of two recurring lines in a fucking 79 minute album. Should the entire White Album be discredited for Revolution 9? |
Quote: | When I hear a line like 'my dick is big', anything that could've been even remotely profound falls to the ground, like watching a thought-provoking psychological thriller with a sudden immature fart-joke thrown in. A ridiculous comparision that describes how I experience it! Abstractly close-minded I may be, but something literally telling me "my dick is big" is incredibly off-putting, I don't care what it's actually telling me. |
Quote: | So when Kendrick says his dick is big (which, it should be noted, he says between saying his hair is nappy and his nose is round), he's implying that when other, presumably non-black, people see him, the first thing they think of is that he must be well-endowed. It's actually a pretty clever line and subverts the trope of macho men implying they have large penises; in this case he's not the one bragging about it - others are acknowledging it. So to write off the entire album after misinterpreting that line would be like writing off the White Album because there's a line about a man masterbating after spying under women's skirts in Happiness Is a Warm Gun. |
Quote: | my dick is big' is the sort of poetic rhyming I normally hear from annoying, immature preteenagers whereas 'Lying with his eyes while his hands are busy working overtime' is a whole lot more subtle and ambiguous, but you're correct... it's possible that anything that sounds dumb is in fact supposed to be interpreted as a clever metaphor for something deep. After all, life ain't shit but a fat vagina! |
Quote: | The whole point of the "my dick is big" line is that Kendrick is confronting racism head on in the blacker the berry. The line is used because as babyBlueSedan pointed out it is a stereotype often used to describe black men. within the context of the song it's pretty difficult to see it as a petty boast.
The Beatles are my favorite band but stop trying to compare them to Kendrick Lamar, it's almost like comparing Beethoven to the Ramones. This album has a narrative, and it's really not that hard to understand since he basically tells you the point of each song before it happens. And yes at the moment this album is kind of overrated, but so are the beatles, especially the white album, which has quite a few great songs, but also some not so great ones, including revolution 9, which is so bad that john lennon eventually admitted to not caring for it, and it's well known that paul mccartney fucking hated it. The white album is longer than this and in all honesty both would probably be better if they were cut down to an hour long running time |
Quote: | Consider this scenario: a man with a child walks into an art museum. In this museum, paintings are displayed containing graphic, vulgar images, including nudity, violence, etc. The man, upon seeing these pictures, storms out of the museum, enraged by the crass sight he and his child had witnessed.
"This is not art! This is disgusting!" he shouts, unable to understand how anybody could find pleasure in something so terrible.
Is this man correct? Subjectively, yes. If he does not enjoy the art, then to him it has no personal value. But to deny the art any value whatsoever would be a crime. Vulgarity of this sort can be used to push an artistic point. Would a war painting be complete without violent imagery? Would Michaelangelo's statues be complete without penises? Would a portrayal of a stereotype be complete without a phrase such as "my dick is big"? No. By including such a statement, Kendrick addresses the stereotype that nobody else has the guts to talk about so bluntly. Some things, such as this, are not vulgar- they are real. Black stereotypical characteristics such as this, that are used to define who Kendrick is based on his physical features, are real things. Many people, I'm sure, don't view Kendrick as an artist but as just another black man. Those who do are missing the bigger picture- its only vulgar because it tries to portray the vulgarity of the world. If you can't enjoy it, that's fine, but you can't ignore the truth of the world we live in. |

I feel I should go back and read some old forums from before I joined BEA. I joined mid-2014 and it seems I missed out on BEA's more interesting times and users. What is this chaotic exit?

Fun playlists... trying to understand what they are though... it seemed in the beginning the music matched my name and then started to drift into maybe just cool playlists you created and had no relation to the user or... totally lost? Regardless, rad concept and thank you.
