pearl jam wouldn't've done buttkiss if it wasn't for nirvana
(i like 'em both)
I would revise that to something like "if Nirvana hadn't topped the charts than Pearl Jam probably wouldn't have been as popular", but musically, there isn't much correlation. Pearl Jam was certainly a more diverse and talented band (whether that makes them "better" or not is up for grabs). They owe a lot more to the likes of The Stooges, Led Zeppelin (and later with Vitalogy, etc) Neil Young's ragged grunge and moral journeys, and even Bruce Springsteen's ballads, than they ever did to Nirvana. _________________ Best Classical Best Films Best Paintings

Yes this is spot on.

Disagree but not by much, since The Wall is my second fave PF album. _________________ All time
I mean I totally respect your opinion, but have you seen this energy? Every time I experience this song live, my whole mind and body explodes. And the lyrics of this song frees my heart, as sappy as it could sound, I feel it came from a genuine place at one time.

The Pearl Jam members were already making high quality grunge in Mother Love Bone and Temple of the Dog. All Nevermind did was break their genre into the mainstream, and that doesn't define the quality of their music.
Every one of the four or five major grunge bands has something unique and they draw from different genres, I try to stay away from ranking them. If I were to rank them, I'd probably put Alice In Chains first, since they had the most consistent discography, but never really recycled anything (like Nirvana did with a few songs). Black Hole Sun's far and away my favorite grunge song though.
