since I am trying to get into metal more... I'll give Kamelot's Black Halo (from Necharsian) a run through this afternoon
EDIT: halfway through and that's all I'm giving it. yeah, this is the metal I try to avoid. I hate the operatic singing style, the guitars aren't even heavy (likely due more to recording than pitch), the solos are laughably mundane metal solos, the "symphonic" work with the strings and the piano is as bad as the guitar (except perhaps on Abandoned), and the way in which Faust is handled is pitiful. I stopped at Moonlight and skipped ahead to Memento Mori because I had a hunch that was the centerpiece... still disappointed... this ruins Kamelot as a whole for me |

| I've listen to Safe As Milk through twice now and while I do not think that is enough to earn a full appreciation of the album, it is enough me to declare it as brilliant. Thanks, Mind Movie. |

Finished listening to "Slanted & Enchanted". Overall, it didn't make as much of an impression as "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain", and too many songs were 'toneless'.

If you don't like Illmatic you don't like hip hop. Be certain to check out Ready To Die and 36 Chambers before you give up on the genre though. ATCQ, De La Soul or Jurassic 5 are a must listen if you're new to the genre also, alot easier to get into than Nas or Biggie.

Yes and no, I mean the lyrics are important but this is a much more complete record than that, the flow, the beats etc. I'm pretty crap at explaining why exactly it is I like music or not but this album, well it's just incredible overall, whether that's the lyrics or whatever I dunno. _________________ Shut up mate you're boring! |

You will either love it or hate it or think it is OK. |

For a person that's not used to hip hop, Illmatic isn't the best choice for a start. I would agree that it's an album which majority of hip hop fans will love, but if we're talking about a person who is not (yet) used of hip hop song structures, rapping style, and the "amount" of words/lyrics (compared to most other genres), also the theme of those songs, then I doubt Illmatic is the one that will "convert" him as it's full of that "usual" stuff.
I think for starters something that's more of a fusion with other genres is better. For me, the first hip hop album I really liked was Arrested Development's 3 years, 5 months... Then I started getting more into the genre and also enjoy the more "classic hip hop" albums. First and foremost - Enter the Wu-Tang, but also Illmatic.
So... yeah. I hope you get what I mean. I'd actually recommend Madvillain. Maybe A Tribe Called Quest, or even Pharcyde you mentioned. |
