See above. As for Beefheart, I think his art works on a deep subconscious and humanistic level. The power of his work comes from deep within. It's highly expressive, emotional, warm, touching and funny. He is one of the few artists I know that can make me cry and laugh simultaneously. |

I agree with hairymarx1 here. Radiohead and Pink Floyd did make some stuff that comes off as a bit pretentious and self-indulgent. Beefheart, however, is certainly not like that.

Yeah I guess self-indulgent and pretentious is very different to each person. Though it is highly arguable as to whether Beefheart was pretentious (or his work) I think it is inarguable that he was self-indulgent. He was nothing but.

Hmm........I guess in experimentalism it's not hard to find self-indulgence. Pretentious? I don't think so.
