Some are good at speaking, but I think most are just so fucking arrogant and smug that self-consciousness doesn't effect them.

Especially back in the UK, much of our electorate simply mis-led and disillusioned by our politics. The same promises and big ides are posed time and time again and then are banished and never materialise.

Yep. I am an attorney for the state legislature, so I spend a lot of time in one-on-one meetings with legislators. I have been amazed at some of the things they will say out loud. They are so sure they're right or so uninterested in what their opponents might think that it doesn't occur to them that they are about to say some heinous nonsense. You apply that total lack of self-awareness across their whole professional life and, voila, you have yourself one extremely confident politician.

Oh god. That sounds like both an interesting and horribly frustrating job. Does this mean you've dealt with Scott Walker?

I'd say that accurately describes it. And I've met Walker a couple of times, but never really "dealt" with him. Apart from drafting his budget, the legislative attorneys don't work with his office directly all that much.

Was he as slimy and crooked as he seems? My friend has worked as a pretty low level political writer, and was able to uncover some very shady business involving Walker. Pretty much the standard, you donate this many million to my campaign and I'll scratch your back dealings.

He strikes me as someone who has managed to rise way above his station.

He started in the state Assembly, where his level of experience and education was pretty average. I was a little surprised when he was elected Milwaukee County executive, but his campaign of fiscal restraint resonated with people, given that he would be replacing a person who resigned amid financial scandal. I was really surprised when he was elected Governor, because Milwaukee County wasn't exactly the model of a well-run county. Of course, his opponent was the mayor of Milwaukee, itself a leader in undesirable categories (e.g. violent crime and infant mortality). And now he is poised to be a well-funded candidate for President.

So, I'll answer your question with a rhetorical question of my own: how does someone so under-qualified manage such a spectacular rise through the political world?

haha. this sounds like the standard political rise to power. Make sure your opponents are always total trash and you're guaranteed to get votes
