Let's use this thread to discuss the recent outbreak of unarmed shootings to minorities. It's a big topic in the news lately, although a lot of people are purposely ignoring it.
Unfortunately, as a dark skinned person in America. I can't afford to ignore it.

I don't like the response though, they definitely should not have looted that QuikTrip.

There's always opportunists looking for excuses to exploit a situation for their own gain. Mask desire to steal with anger and you've got yourself a looter.

I don't even know what can be said about these shooting victims anymore. It's happening so much and it's just despicable. Reminds me of the guy from Staten Island who died recently from being put in a choke hold by NYPD.

Police still abuse their power and racism is still a very real problem. I don't see either being remedied any time soon. It's all a very very slow progression.

This has really escalated into something far bigger and scarier than a kid getting shot. The police in Ferguson are completely out of control. Attacking protesters. Firing tear gas and rubber bullets at non-violent crowds, and going after the media. Even the Missouri state Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal has been tear gassed, “We were in that neighborhood and we were tear-gassed," she said. "I could not breathe, I could not speak, I could not focus, I could not think because I thought that I were going to die because we were shot at and tear gas was constantly thrown at us and the police officers."

I can't think of another event quite like this in the US during my lifetime.

Yeah it is kinda crazy out here in the greater St. Louis area. It's pretty big news out here. I can't say I've witnessed or experienced first hand any of the ramifications of the shooting or the attacks and atmosphere, but I see it on Tv whenever I turn it on. And I sometimes used to go to that QT. bad times.

Yeah I was wondering if you were seeing any of this first hand. It's big news everywhere, or at least should be. This kind of thing should never happen.

I read that they got a new police department head, and he's changed the atmosphere on the ground dramatically - getting rid of the military style riot gear, etc. He even walked with the protesters as a sign of unity. If so, it's an incredible testament to how one person can change the dynamics of a situation dramatically.

Yeah i was reading that too. Quite incredible that chaos can be grinded to a hault by proper leadership.

I really, really, really hope that this turns out well from here on out. It would provide such a glaring and profound example that the best way to police a neighborhood is not through antagonism but understanding, mutual respect and dialog.

Agreed. I hope that lesson is learned, although i'm not incredibly optimistic considering the history of bullshit our country has never learned from, including Iraq.
