The 80's may be the poorest decade in music for me. Anyhow, you can find great pieces in here, specially the first 15 records. So here is the list.

2.- Talk Talk - Spirit Of Eden (1988)
3.- Arvo Part - Täbula Rasa (1984)
4.- The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy (1985)
5.- Pixies - Surfer Rosa (1988)
6.- U2 - The Joshua Tree (1987)
7.- Husker Dü - Zen Arcade (1984)
8.- Talking Heads - Remain In Light (1980)
9.- Joy Division - Closer (1980)
10.- The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead (1986)
11.- Tom Waits - Rain Dogs (1985)
12.- Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation (1988)
13.- Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables (1980)
14.- Glenn Branca - The Ascension (1981)
15.- The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses (1989)
16.- REM - Murmur (1983)
17.- Echo & the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain (1984)
18.- Foetus - Nail (1985)
19.- The Sound - From The Lion's Mouth (1982)
20.- Frank Zappa - Does humor belong in music (1986)
21.- Pixies - Come on Pilgrim (1987)
22.- Kate Bush - In The Hounds of Love (1985)
23.- Throwing Muses - Throwing Muses (1986)
24.- Captain Beefheart - Doc At Radar Station (1982)
25.- Husker Dü - New Day Rising (1985)
26.- Talk Talk - Colour of Spring (1986

BC,

Mainstream-wise,

You're right. The 80's sucked, but there was a lot of good indie and alternative stuff happening that laid the foundation for the alternative revolution of the 90's My first beef: How can you leave off R.E.M.?!!! Along with the Smiths and some others, they are one of the most important bands of the 80's, not to mention of all time. At the very least, Murmur should be on your list. What about the Replacements? Dinosaur Jr.? Good call on Remain in Light and Raindogs. Daydream Nation is amazing. You might consider Sister too.

Here are some albums I would add:

1. Murmur-R.E.M.
2. Let it Be- The Replacements
3. Nebraska- Bruce Springsteen
4. Sound Affects- The Jam
5. It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back-Public Enemy
6. The Police- Outlandos D' A'mour
8. The Violent Femmes-The Violent Femmes
9. Imperial Bedroom-Elvis Costello and the Attractions
10. Sister-Sonic Youth
11. Double Nickels on the Dime-The Minutemen (very underrated)
12. If I Should Fall from Grace with God- The Pogues
13. 3 Feet High and Rising-De la Soul
14. Sign O' the Times-Prince
15. Appetitie for Destruction-Guns n Roses
16. New York- Lou Reed
17. You're Living all Over Me-Dinosaur Jr.
18. Talk Talk Talk- The Psychedelic Furs
19. Boy and War-U2
20. Paul's Boutique- The Beastie Boys
21. The Pretenders- The Pretenders

In fact, I take back what I said earlier. A lot of great music was made in the 80's. You just have to search for it. Your list is good, just far from complete in my opinion.

Cheers.

Thank for your comments Mr Shankly as always they are more than welcome. There are some things I agree and some things I don't. Definetly REM's Murmur should be on that list, I completly forget about it. In fact I'll edit the list later so it can be there.

On the other hand, yes some indie bands help out for the 90's but they were not better than those 90s bands. All of the albums above are good, but I don't know if they can be on the same level, and I consider some of them irregular, but thats just my opinion.

P.S. The ones I haven't heard are The Minutemen but I definetly will know.

I love a number of your picks. Here's my 80's list:

1. Dolmen Music-Meredith Monk (1981)
2. The Ascension-Glenn Branca (1981)
3. Dream Theory in Malaya-Jon Hassell (1981)
4. Psychic...Powerless...Another Man's Sac-Butthole Surfers (1984)
5. Zen Arcade-Husker Du (1984)
6. Double Nickels On The Dime-Minutemen (1984)
7. Daydream Nation-Sonic Youth (1988)
8. Fire of Love-Gun Club (1981)
9. Novus Magnificat-Constance Demby (1986)
10. Spirit of Eden-Talk Talk (1988)

note: Dream Theory in Malaya and Dolmen Music are especially avant-garde so I wouldn't necessarily recommend either. It would depend on your determination, patience and adventurousness.

Avant-garde is a style that I listen to once in a while, and I love it. Sometimes i find melody to be so cloying, that I can't stand anything within it, and that's when I go to Avant-Garde.
Listening one genre or the other (I don't know if is strange or not) comes to me around in cycles, although I listen more to the traditional songs.
I have heard Dolmen Music, but that was maybe 10 years ago. And I must have it somewhere. I think I didn't like it the time I listened to it, but maybe because I didn't give it a chance, but definitly I have to reconsider it, and give it another try.
