I was wondering if you guys would be up for listing out some of the alt rock songs of the 90's that you prefer over the others, and maybe some reasons why you choose those particular songs? It'd be really interesting to me, consider this site is mostly album-based and not very track-based. The songs you choose don't have to be singles, and my definition of 'alternative rock' is very loose.

i.e., you could conceivably include new wave, industrial, trip-hop, shoegazing, dream pop, jangle pop, lo-fi, indie, Britpop, Madchester, acid house, goth rock, rap-rock, rap metal, alternative metal, grunge, post-grunge, post-punk, post-punk revival, post-rock, pretty much everything that has a hyphenated post-something in its title. I know this will incur issues with semantics from at least one user that sees this post, and I'm prepared for that! =P

either the song has to be released as a single between Jan 1990 - December 1999, or it has to be released on an Album, EP, LP, etc. between Jan 1990 - December 1999. (e.g. "There She Goes" was released in 1988 as a single, but the album The La's was released in 1990, so "There She Goes" is a legitimate choice). I just want to know what you guys think characterizes the sound of alternative rock in the 90's.

you can make your list as long as you'd like, but please limit it to 100 songs.

thanks guys!

It'd be a bit long to list them all, if you look at my 90s decade and year charts you'll get an idea. I'll try and build a top 10 up sometime later.

Rocket From The Crypt - Ditch Digger
Fugazi - Merchandise
Dinosaur Jr - Start Choppin
American Music Club - Johnny Mathis' Feet
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Red Hight Hand
Teenage Fanclub - Don't Look Back
James - Sometimes
East River Pipe - Shiny, Shiny Pimpmobile
Grandaddy - A.M. 180
Cocteau Twins - Fotzepolitic
Guided By Voices - Motor Away
