So gruff and dissonant; yet so gentle and harmonious - with some terrific storytelling and delivery that breathes life into this album. Pretty much essential listening.

Tom's masterpiece. Sometimes I prefer Bone Machine but this album captures wonderfully what Tom Waits is all about. A drunk street poet who is rough and gentle at the same time.

And he's always been one of my all time favourite lyricist, and it shows here. Time is a lyrical masterpiece and possibly his finest lyrical moment.
