One of my all-time favorites. Usually, I'm not a fan of long albums, but this one is excellent and really holds my attention because of the high quality of songs. "Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois" and "John Wayne Gacy, Jr." are my favorite songs. I play those ones over and over. "Chicago", "Casimir Pulaski Day", and "The Predatory Wasps" are also fantastic. Every track is well composed and arranged, but those are my favorite five.

I like how so many people have gravitated towards this album over the years. I remember on the first listen it barely scratched the top 100 nearly 4 years ago, now it's on its way to the top 50. This messes with my mind quite a bit, but you don't need to be concerned with that right now. Anyway, great album.

also "ay I'm frum Che-kargo"

Years (...decades...) later, I almost forget how long this took to grow on me. I started off listening to this as "background music" at work 'til I couldn't keep it in the background anymore. Then I listened to it religiously and it became one of those experiences that completely revitalized my love of music and my faith that there will always be something made by someone somewhere that will always be able to remind you that music is one of the best things about being a person. Now, It has a permanent spot in my personal top five (I think. Until the next Illinois comes along.)

Have had it since its release but much preferred his later output especially The Age Of Adz & Carrie & Lowell.

Plus, I remember reading somewhere that it is one of George Osborne's [UK Tory ex-chancellor] favourite albums... Definite loss of coolness factor Wink

Am I the only Sufjan fan who HATES Age of Adz? I do not understand that album's appeal and I still think of it as a huge misstep.

Nope, I agree. I think Age of Adz is undoubtably a misstep. I almost never go back to it apart from Impossible Soul.

Anyway, we just had the album party discussion about this album, so I won't put anything else here. Brilliant album of course.

(Also, I should add, if anyone wants this on vinyl, Amazon Canada has a pretty decent bargain on it right now).

yeah, you're not alone. that's a common conception within sufjan's fanbase. i've also heard from a number of sufjan super-fans that 'you needed to see it live to understand it'.

It is very nice, but it is a weaker effort than the similarly styled Michigan and well short of his epic adventures on Enjoy Your Rabbit.

Sufjan Stevens is a strange one. I never seem to hold his albums in very high regard but then I listen to them and they contain moments of immaculate beauty.
