- Post subject: What albums would be considered Post-Rock classics (2010s)?
|
I came across a reddit thread awhile back discussing this and it was mildly informative. I think the idea has become harder to define in this decade then the last. I mean, in the 2000s we had some opuses from bands like Do Make Say Think, Unwound, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Explosions In The Sky & Silver Mt. Zion just to name a few. So my question is: what constitutes a Post-Rock classic from 2010 & onward?
Here are some I can objectively say are worthy of such status:
'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! by Godspeed You! Black Emperor
The Swans Trilogy (The Seer - The Glowing Man)
Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light on Everything by Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra
And then some I could make the case for:
Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress by Godspeed You! Black Emperor
I, Vigilante by Crippled Black Phoenix
In The Wilderness by Explosions In The Sky
Walking Season by Caspian
Toundra (II) by Toundra
Silent Whale Becomes A Dream by Canopy
Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will by Mogwai
Departure Songs by Hammock
This Will Destroy You by Tunnel Blanket
What do you all have to contribute to this list? _________________ Some RYM paraphernalia:

Nothing. As in any art form, the classic era is when the form is at the height of its means. So I should think the late 90s is the classic era of postrock (think Tortoise, Labradford, Godspeed indeed, Rachel's, Gastr Del Sol, For Carnation, anything Pajo, Mogwai possibly). If anything, postrock might have entered its "postmodern" age.

I absolutely adore this.
Sorry to Skinny though, not one of those I'd consider Post-Rock. I quite like all four, especially Darkside & Stein Urheim. _________________ Some RYM paraphernalia:

This is from last year. Hardly a 'classic' after a few months, but it's good, if you like the 'modern classical' edge of 'postrock' (that makes absolutely no sense). Anyway.

the post-rock I actually enjoy to any extent is few and far between and I'm probably apathetic to or actively dislike like 75% of the genre that I've heard, but this right here is among the finest records I've heard this decade for sure

Post-rock is one of my favourite genres but I've struggled to find anything of particular merit from the 2010s that hasn't already been mentioned in the thread - unless something like Flying Lotus counts? Probably not. _________________ http://distranscontinuum.blogspot.co.uk/

this is how i've come to feel about the genre too. for me, there's way too much slide show soundtracking in post rock, and it's chalk ful of cliches and gets boring fast. even with the bands i've liked releases from, there's usually only an album that i enjoy. _________________ follow me on the bandcamp.
