I don't. 7.8% is lousy, and it's probably higher once you account for those who slip past the census takers. It's true - the US economy needs help.

However, I think it is a PR boon for Obama - 8% was always the magic number quoted. I don't believe those who say it's above 20%. And before one listens to Jack Welch too much, independent civil servants don't 'cook the books'. Were they 'cooking the books' when it was above 8%?

Further, I'm not sure a Republican president (McCain?) would have done any better (if not worse), and I'm not sure Romney is better equipped than Obama to turn it around. It goes beyond the US - this is a global recession.

I think McCain would have done better, but only slightly. I mean, he approved of a lot of the big spending distasters that riddled Obama's career.

All the argument over if John McCain could do better is based purely on hypotheticals, for which it can remain the perfect argument without any consequences. The republicans can deride the stimulus cuz it actually happened, as inadequate as it was, but their response was basically to do nothing, which they can say would've worked because they didn't actually have the responsbility of reviving the free-falling economy. If you want to play in hypotheticals, things today could've been much, much worse for everybody, but because the economic recovery has been pretty slow (which also involves factors beyond the President's and congress's control, including the increasing reliance on technology in the workplace and the struggling economies overseas) the republicans have been able to spread the idea that if only the entire power structure was flipped, somehow we would be in much better shape today. Of course when you actually test the republican-based ideas, as the central budget office did, you get an even grimmer picture of a "recovery", but that's something the conservatives can easily callout as a "biased" source, even though it's completely non-partisan. The problem with both campaigns is that all we've heard is complete generalities and magic numbers being thrown around, but no real concrete ideas as well as fully detailed mathematics (Im not counting that hocus-pocus Ryan budget plan) on how their economic recovery plan would actually work. All they're saying is that everything's magically gonna get better if we elect them but aren't really giving us a persuasive reason why. It just seems like we're voting against the candidate we like the least

Question

Romney and Ryan like to criticize how Obama has 'mishandled' the economy. In considering that, one must ask how a Republican president would have done any better. Since it was McCain running against Obama in 2008, it makes sense to consider him. It's a valid question.
