Note: This has absolutely NOTHING to do with politics, so please don't go there. This is just about music taste.

_________
So guys, when it comes to music taste, are you:

Liberal, Adjective
Not strict; free: a liberal translation
As in, you like (I think, correct me if I'm wrong): Captain Beefheart, The Residents, maybe the Velvet Underground, free jazz etc.)

OR

Conservative, Adjective
Disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc., or to restore traditional ones, and to limit change.
As in, you like (I think, correct me if I'm wrong): Rush, Iron Maiden, Queen, the Mars Volta, baroque music, etc.

Once again, I hope these definitions don't offend anyone; I've just realized that most music falls into one of these two categories.

For instance, someone like Hairymarx would be at the extreme liberal side of music taste, while someone like GARY would be on the extreme conservative side.

It has nothing to do with politics, but of your need of standards in music. While I personally consider myself to be pretty conservative politically, it's hard to be more liberal than me in music.

So guys, what are you musically, liberal or conservative?

Really?

Going by your vague arbitrary guidelines:

Looking at your chart:

Weezer - conservative
Tori Amos - Non-partisan
Pink Floyd - Swings both ways (But DSOTM is conservative)
The Beatles - Conservative
Arcade Fire - Left leaning Conservatives
Black Sabbath - Liberal
White Blood Cells - Right leaning liberals
Patti Smith - right leaning liberal
Smashing Pumpkins - Non-partisan
Led Zeppelin - conservative
Radiohead - Swings both ways (but The Bends is conservative as fuck)
Nirvana - conservative (especially Nevermind)
Kate Bush - Liberal
The Clash - Non-partisan

Should I go on?

I'm not sure I have a single liberal album on my chart under these definitions, so I guess I'm pretty damn conservative on this one (funny considering how liberal I am politically speaking). That being said, I do support musical experimentation, and the bands I love are the ones who manage to find their own sound that is original without disregarding musical standards to the extent that their music is so foreign it's difficult for most people to listen to.

I...have no idea. I'm non-partisan.

Also, those definitions don't really make sense. Why is the Mars Volta in the conservative section, frex? Their music contains a lot of elements of free jazz and Latin music, which a lot of people of a "conservative" musical mindset don't really enjoy.

very interesting article.

i think with a lot of indie, punk, electronic, world music, hip hop albums in my chart, i'm quite liberal then.

Mars Volta conservative, that's a joke right ?
