I'm an atheist because I believe the almost unthinkable unlikelihood of us existing, thinking, being, from explosions of stars into a random collection of collections of atoms is far more beautiful than dismissing this all with a god.

That and the balance of evidence. I'm certainly not against the idea of a god, I am more than willing for someone to convince me - but no one has managed that as of yet. Religion can be a great thing, it really gives people a sense of purpose and community, I'm just not prepared to think that way.

Not trying to push "religion" on anyone, but assuming there is a god, then it is just as likely that this god could have triggered or possibly created these explosions and etc. to create the world. Religion that believes in a "god" that created the world doesn't state how he created the world, just that he created the world. Anyways, I'm currently in religion because of the people, not really the belief of anything.

I don't believe in god because I'm too rational. Honestly I'd love to believe in god and an eternal afterlife but I just can't. I have a strange fear of death for a 21 year old and it would be very comforting for me to believe in life after death but I can't make myself.

Even if I could make myself believe in a god or similar I would never be able to follow any sort of organised religion. For a start my own idea of morality seems significantly at odds with the morals professed by the major religions so I would never be able to subscribe to their version of morality.

Second to that all major religions are so full of contradictions, either of themselves or of the other major religions it just seems pointless. Most people who follow a religion either do it for cultural reasons or they're simply picking the religion whose ideals tally most closely with their own, in which case why do you need religion at all anyway?

So basically I don't need religion because I don't believe in the afterlife and I feel capable of deciding for myself what is morally right or wrong, in fact I trust myself to do this better than any religious body.
