The Night Land by Talaboman

Woozy, organic, kosmische jams sit next to some laidback, fleshed-out house tunes on this new one from John Talabot and Axel Boman. Fans of Talabot's solo work or Nico Jaar and Dave Harrington's Darkside or the lush, spacey end of the German synth spectrum or even Four Tet would be well minded to check it out, because it's lovely. I know that the term competent in the context of music can imply something tethered and uninspired (especially when I use it), but this thing is extremely competent in terms of both sound design and composition (and I definitely mean that as a compliment). It's great. It's cool to hear clean, maximalist house music that isn't flimsy and/or shallow, or otherwise far too ready to rely on hazy textures to conjure Instagram filter nostalgia.

Got me curious. Will listen for sure (and to the Matthew Shipp as well).
