Music which I've seen being labeled as pretentious:
- Music with long songs/compostions.
- Complex and/or experimental music.
- Emotional music.
- Anything that Pitchfork Media likes.
- Music that you need to "get" (growers), because the qualities aren't obvious on first listen. |

It is used for lack of a better word to use. Like "overrated" or calling a song "filler". Words that don't describe the music and rarely used in the right way at all. _________________ And when this stuff gets in, you cannot get it out. |

And gernes that's often labeled as pretentious:
- Indie anything
- Progressive anything
- Art everything
- Classical music
- Jazz
- Experimental anything
- Post-Rock
- Most electronic music genres. |

True
It doesn't mean the music is bad if the artist is pretentious though. _________________ ~Hayden

I just think artists sometimes get a little self indulgent and take themselves a little too seriously, Radiohead was a band I almost mentioned in my first post.
Long tracks are only pretentious if they're unneccesary. I mean if you've got good material for a ten minute long track then by all means do it but don't give me ten minutes of crap just so you sound like a serious band.

mancsoulsister doesn't like radiohead and pinkfloyd for probably teh same reason. She most likely doesnt like sigur ros either. These bands make some people uncomfortable. _________________ "I would expect something wrong with the poll if the chart favorite was not the poll winner" - naples 12-8-11

Hey thanks Kid for telling me what I do and don't like... that's really good of you!
Wrong on all counts btw
but still 10 out of 10 for effort!
I am sure if you keep it up you might actually get it right sometime soon... _________________ It's better to be hated for what you are, than to be loved for what you're not

No they don't Pink Floyd is known for being one of the most accessible bands ever. It's also music that a lot of people get high to...so I doubt I'd consider it uncomfortable.
And Sigur Ros is also soothing. Somewhat confusing at times, but nevertheless.
And Radiohead only makes people feel uncomfortable due to the arguments that they tend to spark in the music industry
All 3 are great though I'm just stating that your point is incorrect. _________________ ~Hayden

Fans are always more pretentious than artists...
My favourite are the profound musical bohemians who have an opinion on every band and won't dare admit that they haven't heard an artist. Or better yet - the fans who swear by anything that's 'underground' while they rail against the sellouts in the mainstream: "Dude, I liked them so much better before they went mainstream." |

manc, i thought you said you didnt like radiohead and you keep saying you dont like floyd, i was just guessing about sigur ros.
these 3 bands have a lot in common.
i know that most people like floyd, but a lot of people would rather go to the dentist than listen to radiohead or sigur ros and it seemed like manc was someone that doesnt like the whole laid back sound of all of them. _________________ "I would expect something wrong with the poll if the chart favorite was not the poll winner" - naples 12-8-11
