Recording of Strawberry Fields Forever began on November 24, 1966 and completed on December 9, 1966 but then was edited by Martin and Emerick. It was not released until February 13, 1967 which is why many use 1967 as its year.

Little Sister was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman and first released as a single in 1961 by Elvis Presley, who turned it into a #5 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 in the UK. The song was later covered by Dwight Yoakam, Robert Plant, Ry Cooder and others. I didn’t consider Cochran’s song because it came out in 1958 and to less commercial success.

The Twist gave birth to the Twist dance craze. The song was written and originally released in 1959 by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters but was only a minor 1960 hit. The Twist song and dance were popularized in 1960 when the song was covered by Chubby Checker. His single reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 19, 1960 and then set a record by being the only single to reach #1 in two different chart runs when it topped the chart again on January 13, 1962.

Like most progressive/experimental songs those I chose often had older generations scoffing.

In my opinion, I feel most Beatle songs are experimental, I feel this because I am a bit of a 'Beatle Maniac' - I like collecting Outtakes and Bootlegs - and through these snippets I understand more how each song is special. Smile

Nice picks Mr. Music. Hurricane Fighter Plane maybe the single greatest experimental rock song. All your picks are great but in particular I really like Facelift, Frownland, Sister Ray, and Walrus Hunt.

This never happened in the greatest albums tournaments but i'd like to see the opinions and reasons why.

Eskimo Vs Not Available

Both fantastic. But for me i have to go with Not Available for two reasons.

1 - Ships A Going Down. This song is ridiculous. If there was a genre for "Hardcore Experimental" this would be the defining song. The musicianship on the entire album is amazing but especially on Ships a Going Down it is truly genius.

2 - This album is The Resident's most crazy, experimental, and most different than all their rest, and when you look at their catalogue and some of the crazy stuff they have made, an album would have to be genius and really really far out and to accomplish the task and that is what "Not Available is."

Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

and though it was never called "experimental" it's definitely unique enough to fit the bill:
February - Jesus Jones

I prefer Eskimo myself but i enjoy Not Available also very much. Everytime i listen to Eskimo i get that icy feeling, the soundscapes are so real. Im hunting a walrus with the natives, doing what they are doing. Its so damn real album.

Very true indeed. I doubt there will ever be another band like the residents again.
