Felt this would be a good thread topic here.

To kick shit off, check this:

http://americamagazine.org/node/146081

^ In Reverend Donald B. Cozzen's book "The Future Of The Priesthood", it is estimated that up to 58% of members of the Catholic clergy were gay.

And from Wikipedia:

"A 2002 nationwide poll in America by the Los Angeles Times of 1,854 Roman Catholic priests reported that 80% of referred to themselves as "mostly" heterosexual, with 67% being exclusively heterosexual, 8% leaning toward heterosexual, 5% completely in the middle, and 6% leaning toward homosexual and 9% saying they are homosexual, for a combined figure of 15% on the homosexual side. Among younger priests (those ordained for 20 years or less) the figure was 23%."

The gay stats of clergymen are mad high. We're talking about 20% of priests who identify as OPENLY homosexual, within a group that condemns homosexuality; imagine how many CLOSET homosexual priests there must be. And if there are that many gay priests, chances are a great deal of the past popes have been gay too.

The Catholic Church is, essentially, a "gay institution". But then why is it so vehemently anti-gay?

I think most people who choose to be celibate for religious reasons are basically closet gays. I dunno, maybe they hate themselves for being gay and it's makes it more tolerable if they hate others for it aswell. If you're gay and you don't want to be gay it's easy to be homophobic, which I think is the answer to your question. They're just bitter because whilst they're still hating themselves and struggling to accept their sexuality, other gay guys and girls are busy getting on with their lives and being happy.

Don't know how he got his estimate of 58% though, I'm guessing most catholic priests don't identify themselves as gay whether they are or not.

Oh and this thread reminded me of Frankie Boyle talking about Ann Widdecombe (homophobic bitch)

Quote:
Ann Widdecombe says she's a virgin for religious reasons... the reason being that God made her incredibly ugly

Laughing

EDIT: Frankie Boyle on NMTB was incredible, if you haven't seen it you should. He slags off Ann Widdecome here aswell.

This guy Cardinal O'Brien is the head of the Catholic church in Scotland, the most senior of the UK Catholic clergy, and has been the most vocal in his opposition to gay marriage in the UK over the past year.

Just recently he's been accused of "inappropriate acts" by four (male) priests though.

Quote:
O'Brien, who is due to retire next month, has been an outspoken opponent of gay rights, condemning homosexuality as immoral, opposing gay adoption, and most recently arguing that same-sex marriages would be "harmful to the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of those involved".

Basically he's a complete cunt and this news has made my day.

It's sad. Religion doesn't have to be anti-gay. There are many liberal-minded churches that are open to a variety of lifestyles (many Anglican and United churches in Canada, for example). Most Catholics I know are quite open-minded and moderate. The institution and leadership, however, keeps shooting themselves in the foot with their neolithic views, blatant hypocrisy, broken bureaucracy and stubborn refusal to adjust. One wonders why church attendance is plummeting... Rolling Eyes

I believe accepting homosexuality is an integral step to the catholic/Christian church's survival and growth. What do you think? Would you be more religious if this were the case? I might...
