I thought it was okay but I don't see what the big deal is.
It sets up the standards for modern music. I watched the Pitchfork documentary for this album and, I've got to say, that they went all out with the production values. The themes and lyrics are so deeply personal that it almost sends me in a frenzy of depression but also of wonder at how we can acheive sounds at such blistering heights. The vocals might not be the best, but a common trait with all of these songs is that "you're in despair and you're singing" (quote by Wayne Coyne) so it makes sense that it was a decision they went with.
it's probably my most favorite record that i listen the least. it's just too powerful and kind of scary and can easily change my mood. brilliant.

Amazing.. It took me like 15 million listens.. Still amazing though.
The music is great.
So sad I really don't like the vocals...
I like and respect The Flaming Lips and have been following their career since they broke in as an independent act in 1986. I have their early stuff on vinyl. I have to confess though that I was always perplexed at the enormous critical praise heaped on 'The Soft Bulletin.' I mean it's good, but a classic, I don't think so. Perhaps it's the nasally, hard to listen to vocals or the maudlin feel to the whole thing. But I actually find it depressing in parts. Maybe it's just me! I also feel the same way about Mercury Rev. They're a couple of bands that I have faithfully purchased over the years but am never inspired to play at home. Just being honest!!
Fifteen years later, this is still growing on me. Heh.
Their Absolutely best album. At first listen I let 25 in my chart
Not my favorite Lips' album, but holy goodness, is this thing good. "Buggin'," "Feeling Yourself Disintegrate," and "Sleeping on the Roof" are about as amazing as it gets. Truly astounding.
