It may not reach the individual highs offered on its predecessor, but while Sound of Silver's best five tracks towered above its other half, This Is Happening's cohesion gives it the edge. LCD's parting shot finds James Murphy at both a vocal and a lyrical peak, this is his most personal set of songs yet. A fitting swan song that holds up very well with repeated listens and more than enough to tide us over until Murphy returns to the studio.
Highlights: Dance Yrself Clean, Home, I Can Change, You Wanted a Hit?, One Touch
If Somebody's Calling Me was a better song this album would be just as good as Sound Of Silver. As it stands it's just amazing.
The production is a fantastic step up from the previous two albums. The songwriting remains top notch, though unfortunately Somebody is Calling Me does not quite meet the standards of all of the other tracks. Still, a great album to end the career of a great artist.
It may have helped that I heard this before most of its influences (Talking Heads, New Order, etc), but I honestly am not bothered by all the similarities and derivativeness. It's catchy, fun and the lyrics are great. My faves are All I Want, Dance Yrself Clean and Home.
(also, in regards to a very old comment: martintho probably only likes that one song by the band, so I don't see why he's so "wrong" (apart from hating on the band :P))
I'm not one of those people who dances to music, even when I'm alone. That being said, I have busted out a move or two when I had this on in my room.
Top 2 - All I Want, I Can Change
Each of their first two albums felt half-baked to me -- half-filled with kick-arse dance punk-ish jams and half-filled with just "so-so" ideas. 8 of the 9 tracks on "this is happening", their best album, are awesome songs, fine upbeat workout material. Full of self-doubt and self-love, this lyrically-every-man album ("drunk girls" anyone?) is as relatable as it is danceable.
@martintho....I really don't know how to tell you how wrong you are...On, like...3 different levels. Amazing what you just accomplished in less than 10 words.
Anyways, This Is Happening really isn't my favourite side of LCD Soundsystem. It's a good, average album, with some nice tracks though. I think it was a bit over-rated (due to the power of Pitchfork no doubt...).
@martintho I can't even start to describe what's wrong with that comment. Made me lol though.
