"Soundtrack to Love Boat" is the most accurate description of this album that I've read so far.
(oh, but don't get me wrong, I like it)
Thank God for the internet I would not have to buy this album. These would be lost money. :((
Mozart, spot on mate.
I actually loved this album before I even bothered figuring out the lyrics. And they just made it even better.
"Sexual Bendiness" - hahaha!
There are certain things I have a soft spot for: 1) Songs which are simultaneously funny and emotive, 2) Songs which have sections (not just verse, chorus, verse), and 3) Sexual bendiness. Album has all three. 2 means that it repays repeated listens like a mofo.
Dirty street corners from the year 2029? There could be plenty of those but lets not bother them, this is 2010. Perhaps this group of chaps, with the strangest name since Oreo, think they are from the future but... actually lets give them that... they can have that. Taking from what came before yet sounding like what is yet to come, we have such ditties as 'Bright Lit Blue Skies' 'L'estat (the maid song)'. The later starting like The Velvet Underground on M&M's and hallucinogens before carrying on in a woozy slumber of a tired ELO and... well starting again. Saying a lot is going on in this album is a understatement. This is a 15 year olds room cluttered to the ceiling with only a tiny space for a bed. Proper mess like. It does have it's moments though. 'Round and Round' is a song I could see myself coming back for and the bass line is clearly their strongest suite there. It's like future Paul McCartney had a baby or something with who ever played it in... Interpol, yeah them lot. I admit it, I choose a random band there. These lot are hard to find contemporaries for. If there are any I'm sure they're well kept secrets kept off my radar. It is a shame as groups like this can be better over time. When the refine their ideas to be specific. I mean while you have a song like 'Butt-House Blondies' which is appealing in its own dirty way, it is actually one of the most generic songs on here. Now I know generic idea's can make great songs... It's just I don't want to see this band fall flat on their face every time they try their own idea. Even when they borrow from the past it doesn't sound all well. 'Revolution's a Lie'? Or is it a pantomime mockery of Ian Curtis? He so sounds like that guy on this one. There is hope here but it will take me a while to come back here. I'm done.
zappa, primus, 10cc
Haven't heard the entire thing yet, but Round & Round is brilliant.
EDIT: Just listened to it, not bad, Round & Round is still the standout though. Beverly Kills is another good song.
A very good album.
Unique, interesting, and still highly overrated as an album. Moments of brilliance are fleeting at best.
@purple - hipster culture chooses music like it chooses jeans. They don't listen to the music they like, they "listen" to the music that would make them look good to others. There is no enjoyment. They wear their music like clothes. They may be all stoic and passive when walking around with their berets and t-shirts of their favorite motorcyclist but inside... inside is misery. All the pleasure of music is gone. Excitement for the latest releases is replaced for the need of "the link". Live music is a chore. The only gigs they go to are for bands they didn't know existed 20 minutes ago.
