Try it again. It may take a few listens, but I'm getting into it. You have to get used to the style. Soundgarden's style can be very different from average grunge, and once you get used to this, every song will sound a lot better.
I expected quite a lot of it, but it turned out be some boring grunge.
Near perfect. It may last over 70 minutes, but never once does this album stall. The compositions are flawless, and this album is most distinguished in the way Chris Cornell's vocals float over the top like as though they were just another instrument. Pure genius.
Black Hole Sun is one of the greatest songs ever.
It has some songs wotrh the listen, but the majority isn't great.
Although I loved Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney etc I never gave Soungarden much time as I found Cornell's vocals a bit too close to 80's metal. It was only when one of my work colleagues referred to their sound as "Dirt Fudge" that my interest was piqued. So 18 years later with a more receptive attitude to different genres I finally get it. Superunknown is clearly their magnum opus, a sprawling collection of great songs. If only I'd given this a go 18 years ago it would undoubtedly make my 100.
Not bad, but not impressed.
The members of the band all contribute to the composition, and together they successfully fashion a record which delves deep into the darker recesses of the human condition. The atmosphere, developed with careful blending of texture and striking but unpretentious lyrics, immerses the listener into a vivid experience of horror, infirmity, despondency, exasperation, indignation. This album epitomizes the social commentary and tones of angst and alienation that set grunge apart from other genre styles.
The gemstones: "Fell on Black Days", "4th of July", "Superunknown", "Black Hole Sun", "Spoonman", "The Day I Tried to Live", "4th of July",
The polished minerals: "Fresh Tendrils", "Head Down", "Limo Wreck", "Mailman", "My Wave", "Like Suicide"
The sediment: "Kickstand", "Half"
Some really really great tracks, then some not so great.
Key tracks - Black Hole sun, Fell on Black Days, My Wave, Day I tried to live, Let me drown, Spoonman.
All amazing songs but, songs like Superunknown,Kickstand, mailman are just average.
