This album is overrated. I love 2pac but this album seems to be the one that defines his legacy. I also don't like the idea that him and Biggie both released double albums around this time just for competition sake. And Biggie's second disc blows this second disc out of the water thanks to Notorious Thugs, The Sky's The Limit, Going Back to Cali, etc. Both of them feel too long and bloated though. But 2pac's second half is pretty weak in my opinion.
The first half however does offer a few gems. Ambitionz as a Ridah is a classic. 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted, How Do You Want It, I Aint Mad At Ya are good songs. I don't like how they put the California Love Remix on here though. Put the original. No More Pain has got a sick beat. I'm a big fan of Trading War Stories and Life Goes On though. Their both really good depicting street life and some of the stuff they had to deal with growing up and they don't make rap now like 2pac did. So overall 2pac's first half of this album is very good and definitely worth a listen but if you are looking for the definitive 2pac album, check out Me Against the World.
2Pac was an enigma. How could someone wax poetically about his family, women and his community and then spew aggressive, violent, misogynistic lyrics? If he had stayed true to one over the other, he would have been another DMX. By showing both sides, he shows a complexity. Disappointing that he was too stupid to leave his thug profile in the studio. However, you can't deny the depth of his lyrics and the strength of his flow. Dre helps too.
A strange, bloated album, as any double-LP would be. Still, the prize tracks are among 2pac's best: "All About U," "How Do U Want It," "Wonder Why They Call You Bytch," "Ambitionz as a Rider" and the eponymous "All Eyez on Me" are all keepers. Wonder why they included that half-hearted remix instead of the original, far superior "California Love," though.
i love tupac, prolly my second favorite rapper after nas but this album always bothered me. it feels like the producers took the artistic merit out from under pacs feet with all these funky radio-ready beats and SO MUCH GOD DAMN FILLER, minus 15 songs woulda helped a lot. i guess this is what happens when you blow up and 90,000 producers wanna give u a beat and make a hit, its not a bad album, just overrated and not his best one. both killuminati and against are better. killuminati is far better, he left death row producers and made "his own" album and its a beautiful portrait of an angry, betrayed, poet plus the production is way better, more emotion.
I love Cali like I love women !
2pac makes Ja Rule look like Karen Carpenter. Are there too many filler tracks on this album ? Yes. This album is overloaded. But good songs are GREAT. Some of the best rap songs ever. "Only God Can Judge Me" ? "Ambitionz As A Ridah" ? "I Ain't Mad At Cha" ? His voice is killer.
I listen to the song 'Changes' a lot. I find it as an excellent/inspirational song and have it on my mp3 right now. When I first saw this album for sale I thought to myself "Wow! A cheap 2pac CD. I really should listen to more by him!". Now I have always heard him being described as a poet and an inspirational figure and I wasn't going to argue that after listening to 'Changes'. But listening to this, that poet never came across. In fact, he comes across as a creep at times. Life Goes On and California love are great but apart from that there was hardly anything on here music and lyrics wise worth noting. Huge disappointment.
