the versions of Hurt & Personal Jesus are sublime
Love this album...... Brave, honest, stunning...... Some of my favourite covers of all time
Damn - Hayden said exactly what I would have. Great individual tracks, but some where Johnny Cash's sparse voice doesn't sound raw and emotive, it sounds strained. Hurt, Personal Jesus, Man Comes Around, and Give My Love to Rose are great. Bridge Over Troubled Water and In My Life don't work.
Best Tracks: The man comes around, Hurt.
It's hard to rate this album. First off, just to get it out, that cover of Hurt is amazing. Probably the best remake of a song an artist has ever done. I think he understood it more than Trent did to be honest. Now, for the album. It, sadly, is horribly done. Cash's singing on 9 of the tracks is actually flat. He slaughtered Bridge Over Troubled Water, which I was hoping would be as good as Hurt, but oh well. The emotion in most the songs is what makes this album what it is. I'm not sure if I'll ever listen to this again as a whole, but some good solo tracks.
A very sad album, but a good listen. He clearly knows he hasn't much time left with some of his song choices - In My Life, We'll Meet Again etc. His voice is clearly going in some of the tracks - In My Life is sung out of tune. Hurt for me is the stand-out track. Very poignant.
"Hurt" is great, as are several others. But "The Man Comes Around" shouldn't be ignored. The weakest moment is Fiona Apple's lame attempt at harmony on "Bridge Over Troubled Water".
I wouldn't call anything here "very poor." Some songs are better than others, but none of them are bad. Great album, anyway. The "Hurt" video brought tears to my eyes when I first saw it, and the album as a whole has a similar vibe. You can tell he knew it would probably be his last, and wanted to make the last one he put out if not his best, as good as any of his previous albums.
Some great tracks mixed with other very poor ones. I Hung My Head and In My Life were my favorite ones. It takes a song or two before you can adjust to this guys voice though.
Best track : "Personal Jesus".
