Oh my word! A very good Blur album! You would have neer seen it coming at the time!
In agreement with drakonium, the first half is excellent - there's not much wrong with it. But the second half is... drastically bad.
Everytime, I listen Blur's Early works. I feel Damon is one of best lyricists.
The first half is one one the best first halves ever, and the second is one of the worst. How did they manage to do that?
Here is an example of an underrated record. Not all Blur greatest songs are in here, and as an unit the album may sound "strange". However, there aren't any bad tracks in here, and in my opinion people say it is worse than it really is. Charmless Man, The Universal, Stereotypes are examples of the best this album has to offer.
The Great Escape is Blur at their most straightforward minus the quixotic eccentricities of yore...so, is that a bad thing? Not really, if some people were to be more truthful about what it is they exactly like about this band. Albarn's songwriting makes another leap forward with some excellent tunes in the shape of Best Days, The Universal, and He Thought of Cars. The problem is that the album is very Park Life Pt 2 and the band are about to learn that you should, never, NEVER, give the public what they want.
Blur's unremarkable, yet solid album. This is the solid standby - nothing crap, nothing brilliant, all solid. Did I say solid?
An underrated album among the fans, even if it received very positive professional reviews. I like the album - not more than Parklife - but more than MLIR or Blur or 13. The Universal, Charmless Man, Stereotypes, He thought of cars, Dan Abnormal, Yuko and Hiro, all these songs are VERY good. Especially the second half of the album flows together so well. Damon had right, it would be a great musical.
Some high quality songs (Country House, Charmless Man) mixed with a bunch of rather boring stuff. All in all an ok album but not more.
People call this worse than it really is. The Universal, Country House and Charmless Man are memorable tracks.
