really mind throbbing, but after a while you go numb and it all sort of makes sense. beautiful
As amazing as this is, I don't understand why people call it a fusion of rock n' roll and jazz... just because it has electric bass, guitar, and piano in it? The most important part of rock n' roll is that the snare is on the 1 & 3 beat and bass drum is on the 2 & 4 beat. Nothing like this ever happens on this album (maybe Miles Runs the voodoo down)... granted, I understand it is fusion jazz... but just because something has electric or non-electric instruments doesn't automatically mean it is borrowing influences from rock n' roll... I guess just rock music in general... anyways, in my opinion it is simply Jazz with electrical instruments. I think this is one reason why I don't like labels... half the time they aren't even true (grunge imo for example, is a trick on kids to buy "new" music).
A spontaneous chaotic unpredictable atmosphere permeates "Bitches Brew". Some may find this album to be a bit too random and confusing, due to it's unconventional style, feeling it to be a bad acid trip. Too all over the place.
The spontaneity is contained within a framework. The bandleader, Miles Davis, can be heard whispering cues or instructions and snapping his fingers to indicating tempo. After recording, Miles took to the tapes, splicing, editing and moving them around further arranging the songs.
Theres a darkness to this trend setting album. It's a dense atmospheric ride. You can lose yourself in these potent moods and distinct instrumentations, piled in layers upon layers.
An intense, unique, improvisational sounding groundbreaking album.
Complete and utter mindfuck of a listen. I love it.
While I found Kind Of Blue to be pretty good, this is the Miles album that blew my mind!
My favorite Miles Davis release
Nice to hear the introduction of a mixture of instruments here not common in Jazz, that doesn't suck!
"How cool was Miles Davis? He was a key player in untold musical movements, inspired everyone from Sly Stone to John Lydon and led a life rich with colourful hedonism. Pretty cool then, as his 1957 album, Birth of the Cool laid bare. His finest album, though, was 1970’s experimental avant-garde masterpiece, Bitches Brew. Inspired by the likes of Hendrix and Sly Stone, its improvised quality and crossover appeal gave birth to jazz fusion. A challenging, at times impenetrable listen, it remains a benchmark in modern music."
Miles Davies' most daring and influential album.
An interweaving jungle of noise. Many have explored its depths, but none thus far have tamed this wild, unforgiving landscape.
