Wonderfully soulful album. The opening 4 tracks are just wonderful. Don't really like his other stuff but this is awesome.
For several reasons (he never progressed his sound from that point afterwards, you could call him outrageously arrogant for trying to fit the whole tradition of blues into one work through sampling etc.), including the ones Junodog mentioned in his comment, it's very easy to hate this album and Moby in general, both as an artist and a personality. Putting these arguments aside, being also somewhat biased because I have associated many of the tracks in this record with happy memories from my childhood and trying to consider the album's quality separately from everything else secondary, it's a beautiful, moving piece of work, with surprisingly few fillers (mostly towards the end) and one that has aged gracefully. Among the best albums of the '90s imho.
Great background album. At the time, I really enjoyed it. However, it's been hocked to every advertising campaign under the sun, and now I associate it with yuppie booze, cars, and consumer shite. Moby you sell-out. Way to ruin your own work.
Moby at his finest. "Porcelain" and "Southside" stand out.
Maybe my least fav album of the 90's
There's a lot of "everything is wrong" in "play", i just think the sampling choices are more focused and soulful. The soul samples, lush synths and vocals affectingly combine for an at-times moving album experience, like in "porcelain" or "why does my heart feel so bad?" or "natural blues". An edited version of "south side" (featuring gwen stefani) was the hit. "bodyrock" does as advertised. "machete" slashes ravers with rage. Very good album which perfected the new way to promote albums -- tv commercials, tv shows ("my weakness" was used very effectively in an x-file), movies and movie soundtracks, internet ads, video games, eventually radio -- wherever something could be advertised, you heard a track off of "play".
One of the most incredibly deep albums i know. While some may argue its all just samples. Moby takes the very very best Samples and bundles them together into somthing with meaning. I hate the way how when i mention this album to people they say ''oh Moby, i hate techno'' . Its not techno, its amazing. Best traks: 'Honey', 'Natural blues','Why does my heart feel so bad' and the very best track is the one without vast amounts of sampling= 'Southside'
