Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 3% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 77.6/100, a mean average of 77.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 78.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.6.

An original album, but not as musically developed as I thought it would be. It is much closer to impressionistic music; relaxing, but not particularly memorable. 9/10.

Solid but a tad old-fashioned for the time period.

They never played as a trio before this recording. Mingus and Roach didn't know what songs or instructions they had until the tapes were about to role. So what you have here is a very raw experience of jazz. And it is tremendous!

A good record but not great. Sometimes discord works in arts favor, not the case here.

Great artists, who did not always get along. It was reported Mingus left before the album was complete as it was agreed by all three artists to collaborate, however, Ellington tended to have things done his way to the displeasure of Mingus. Regardless, it sounds great, and one of the better playing performances from Ellington since the 1940s.

Again at the top of an art form. What an artist and what a collective effort.
