Some decent songs (Trailer Trash, Cowboy Dan, Bankrupt on Selling), but overall a fair few misses. Understandable for an album this experimental, but still not sure how people can think it's better than the Moon and Antarctica, it's not even close...
not as good as TM&A but still very good.
fav tracks: Cowboy Dan, Trailer Trash, Bankrupt On Selling.
A manic American travel log in which Isaac Brock takes us from paved highway to bumpy dirt road at the drop of a hat. It contains exhilarating, venom spewing barn burners as well as light, venom spewing contemplative beauties. The view from the road is not pretty. It is littered with shells of shopping malls, abandoned cars, and mountains of shiny trash. The best song writing in modern rock and the greatest album in a decade of relatively lackluster underground music.
Highlights: Teeth Like God's Shoe Shine, Cowboy Dan, Bankrupt on Selling, Trailer Trash, Jesus Christ Was an Only Child, Doin the Cockroach, Heart cooks Brain.
1. The Lonesome Crowded West
2. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
3. Moon and Antarctica
4. This is a Long Drive For Someone WIth Nothing To Think About
5. Good News For People Who Love Bad News
I don't come across "perfect" albums very often. Much better than The Moon and Antarctica.
This album isn't as transcendental as The Moon & Antarctica or as polished as Good News and We Were Dead, but is has a very great indie charm to it. Isaac Brock is a very interesting singer and guitarist, and the drums throughout the entire album rival that of any other.
First old album I listened to by Modest Mouse. It is their second best. The moon and antarctica is the first.
My favorite Modest Mouse
Good album, fav track; 'Trailer trash'.
This is a crazy mess of a fine album. All of Brock's philosophical conundrums and witticisms are on stage here. They'd be poignantly refined on "moon & Antarctica", but this is a great prelude to the thoughtful insanity they would come, from the philosophical lyrics to the screech-to-crawl guitars and vocals painting an urban landscape to drive, sing and shout to.
