Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 64.1/100, a mean average of 63.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 63.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 19.2.

I love it lol. Don't go in expecting a Neil Young record, go in expecting something weird and different and super fun. I love electronic music, new wave, Neil Young and weird music so this is perfect haha.
Bem melhor do que sua má-fama!
Disturbing to say the least. Rating (61.67)
Oh boy. You know you have a bad synth album when the best thing about it is the guitar tone sounds pretty alright. The vocoder sounds AWFUL. The synth tones sound AWFUL. The first song is quite deceitful, it just sounds like a Neil Young outtake from a previous year. Then you get into Computer Age, which is admittedly the best of the synth oriented songs on this record. But that does not mean this song is good in any way. And it just gets worse. I have a lot to say about pretty much every song on this record, with everything pretty much boiling down to, "It bad,". I'll spare you the details, BUT his self cover of Mr. Soul is one of the worst things I've ever heard in my life. It just sounds SO. BAD. How do you listen through an album like this and think, "That sounds pretty good, let's release it". It baffles me. The last song, Like an Inca, is one of those songs that doesn't feature many synths. The only problem is that this song is unbelievably boring and dull. I cannot recommend this album to anyone. Ever.
I've been on a Neil kick recently so I decided to give this a listen out of curiosity. After the first couple tracks I thought this was going to be pretty good and that it only got panned because it was a move away from traditional rock and folk. I was ready to claim it was better than Comes a Time. After the second track, which is enjoyable and well-written, these songs turn mediocre and have some pretty cliche/laughable lyrics. They're much more Mr. Roboto than Kraftwerk. I've heard good things about Like An Inca, but I much prefer its incarnation as Hitchhiker. Honestly this is worth a listen just to sate your curiosity but don't expect much.
Knowing the very touching "concept" of the album may help to appreciate it a little more.
It's Neil trying to communicate with his son through the music (born with cerebral palsy and unable to speak...).
As Neil says "At that time he was simply trying to find a way to talk, to communicate with other people. That's what Trans is all about. And that's why, on that record, you know I'm saying something but you can't understand what it is. Well, that's exactly the same feeling I was getting from my son."
Not quite what I expected. I expected an electronic album. The first track is as straightforward as any Neil Young song, it's not until the second track where the album's new sound starts to be heard. Still, to be honest, it's just a typical Neil Young song that is just wrapped up in vocoders and other electronic noises. It's okay, but the album is not Young's strongest set of songs and that's what's more noteworthy to me than the sound of some of the tracks and it feels all a bit forced in places.Interesting, but nothing spectacular.
One thing you can say about Mr. Young is he was never afraid to stretch his limits. A weird record but it's not as bad as it's reputation.
Bizzare record. "Like an Inca" had the potential to be a great song, if only it was 5 minutes shorter. I'm not one for giving people credit just because they break with norms, but Neil's experimentations get a thumbs up from me in light of the quality of his entire body of work.
not quite as bad as it's reputation would suggest but far from essential
