This is his best album, it will sound very depressing in the beginning but then you will discover it's beauty. Is this one better than transformer ? Difficult to say, this is so diffirent
Great storytelling and I love his twisted singing.
It would have been interesting to hear Berlin as it was planned initially, as a double album. There's a feeling we didn't quite hear the whole story here. Still, in some ways that kind of works, as we got the loudest moments of pain, happiness, delusion and tragedy instead, and it all fits the story pretty well.
I first bought this album because I read in a book about Pink Floyd, that it is regarded as possibly the most depressing rock record. Being an aficionado of depressing rock, I bought it and indeed, it is depressing and sad, but is also very poetic and has beautiful songs. A concept album that flows perfectly and it makes justice to its descriptions as a "movie without images". This album had to spend many years aging in an oak barrel to be appreciated in more favourable terms by a wider audience.
This is such a depressing album. My wife always gets upset when she hears those children crying. It is a great album though and I agree with those who think it is better than Transformer.
'New York' is by far and away Reed's best album.
Better than transformer, by a long shot. Bit more depressing, but it works out. It's like VU meets Bob Dylan on this one, and it works really well. Berlin, Men Of Good Fortune & The Bed are the best tracks. Shame this one is as well known
Yeah, I agree that it's really depressing, especially side two, but "Men of Good Fortune" and "Caroline Says" (both parts) are just great. I think it's pretty safe to say that this is Lou's best solo work. It's only rivals are Transformer (which I always thought was somewhat overrated) and New York, which is a great, but completely different, record.
Very difficult album in a suicidal sense.
A gut-wrenchingly depressing album, but really good all in all. The downfall? It sounds a little overproduced here and there.
