Probably his most successful commercial album, but its not the hits that stand out for me. Mercy Street is a beautiful song, both musically and lyrically, and Milgrams 37 is short and poignant. Red Rain is a great opener as well.

An all time great. Mercy street and In your eyes are 2 of the most brilliant songs ever.

There are hardly any catchy songs here. Plus the very 80s sound didn't make it any better for me.

The hit singles are wildly out of place on an otherwise incredibly lush, melancholy album. "Mercy Street" might be his best song.

His most commercial album in terms of singles and with some great guest work with Kate Bush and Laurie Anderson this album really shines.

while the best songs are "Sledgehammer" and "Big Time," they're odd ducks in this atmospheric and kinda sad record. Gabriel's strengths are in the subtle and nuanced, but his celebratory anthems on this record work like they don't on others. this is Gabriel's glossiest and most pop album, ranking right behind Melt in overall quality.

You wouldn't know how deeply engaging this album is by hits "sledgehammer" and "big time". Fellow radio hit "in your eyes" does more to underscore peter's mastery of world music informing his own. Or check out "this is the picture" to see how far he's come as a solo artist. This is his best album since "the lamb".

An incredible album from start to finish.
