Automatic For The People is the album with the hits and most of their best songs but Murmur is the most consistently good. It should get more credit for its influence as there was nothing else at the time that sounded like it. Favourite songs : Laughing, Sitting Still, Pilgrimage
Not a great album by any means. Pretty good for being in the '80s though. Solid debut.
Good debut.
Unbelievably, incomprehensibly ahead of their time by 10 years. They were one of the few bands that blazed the trail for Alternative Rock.
Great to see this album 2nd in the list for R.E.M. Set a very high standard from the outset & as I think someone else has said, great a whole "new sound". Would we have had bands like The Replacements or even The Smiths coming thro without this album blazing the trail? Love it.
It's hard to think of a better debut. Every song on this album is great; the layered, subtle production is brilliant on Mitch Easter's part. Fun fact: Talk About The Passion has about 40 layered guitars on it.
What a debut album - sounded so different than anything else at that time. Radio Free Europe and Pilgimage are great tracks.
junodog4Such a bold sound from a new band. REM gave hope to those who thought the 80s were going to be dominated by fluff-pop, metal, and mindless arena rock. Thoughtful, catchy and melodic. The beginnings of a great band.
