This was Kurt Cobain's favorite Rem album
Previous albums were short on hits but consistently great with few if any songs that you'd want to skip past. From Green onwards R.E.M. started to write hit singles and catchy songs but the album only tracks seemed to suffer in comparison (with some exceptions). I do like it but i rarely listen to it over the other great albums they released. I Remember California deserves a mention - great song that doesn't often get mentioned.
This is where R.E.M. became 'mainstream' and supposedly jumped the shark a little. Hmm. Well, it's not their best work, but their best work is really good. There's still plenty of fun and joy to be found here, paving the way for the similarly accessible Out of Time, and eventually Automatic for the People, their masterpiece. Yes it's a step backwards for R.E.M. (for better things to come), but it's hard to say a bad word about Green, because in truth it's just such a nice, pleasant album.
Definitely has its high points (Orange and Pop Song) but far from what they are capable of.
Green finds the band turning more towards the world and away from the insular, hermetically sealed musicianship of the IRS years (albums which I happen to like btw).
One of the more accessible albums in their discography but definitely not a "sellout" record as some claim. This contains an air side and a metal side, meaning there are equal amounts of light music such as Stand and Pop Song 89 as well as heavier music like Turn You Inside Out.
Not a big REM fan, but Stand is a good tune.
For me, this is when it all comes together. Everything they were doing on Document, done even better! This was one of the first albums I ever bought and I still love hearing it today.
Inconsistent. Michael Stipe indulges himself a little too much in some of his drifting introspective dreck and lightweight pop. However, tracks 3,4,5,7,8 and 10 are great. Orange Crush is an all-time best-of.
This is the band already running short of musical ideas. Pop Song 89 is ironic and likable but not terribly successful in its irony. The Wrong Child is typical REM experimentation gone bad. But You are the Everything is successful harmonic convergence you'd expect (in my estimation, probably their last) and Orange Crush is big muscular social commentary. Get Up and World Leader are fine REM but let's say that most of the last half is mostly half assed. Stand is the quintessence of this album, then: a band on the brink of self parody.
