There are great songs, there's a fantastic one, and there are a couple of flops. Mostly, it's a great album until track 10.
Not as consistently strong as Core, but the highlights are amazing (Big Empty, Interstate Love Song, Meat Plow, Vasoline). One of two indispensable STP albums. Not grunge, not wanna-be metal. Funky hard rock.
STP doesn't seem to get much credit for how great they are as a rock band. They have all the elements that make a great band...great songs, a killer frontman, awesome guitar playing, and a great rhythm section. For me, I don't see this band as grunge (unfair labels for all bands concerned), they're hard rock (I hear a huge Zeppelin influence). This is their best overall album and it certainly was one of the best albums of the 90's. For rock fans, STP is a band that should be listened to and appreciated...all their albums are great!
A more diverse and consistent album than Core. Pretty classic and also complex, believe it or not. You'll listen to it over and over again trying to pick up everything.
Labeled the second "Eddie" early on forced to jump ship from that sound, unfortunately. STP at their best. Favs; 'Vasoline' 'Big Empty' and 'Adhesive'
To me, one of the best grunge albums. Excelent
One of the many post grunge alternative bands capitalizing on a certain sound. But I'd say they were the best of that huge bunch by a good deal. They've written a couple of the best rock songs of the last 20 years.
My favorites on the album include "vasoline", "interstate love song", "pretty penny" ("when you wake in the morning -- gone"), "big empty", ""unglued"" and the secret song sung in a 50s crooner style tucked in at the end. There's a laid-back disgruntled/upset prettiness about this album. "big empty", from a movie soundtrack, completes this album as its dissipating soul -- it wouldn't be the same without its languid, vacuous desperation. "unglued" is probably my fav with its non-stop churn into the next verse/chorus plus its opening lyrics.
A slap in the face when I discovered STP and got Core and Purple and listened to them back to back months on end. Once again, play loud. Shame they couldn't keep it to that calibre.
CONTEXT: STP rise from the constrains of grunge; they're still trying to find an identity, but the album is focused and consistent. MUSIC: The band doesn't abandon guitar heavy riffs, but they infuse the tunes with elements of psychedlica, folk, and world percussion. LYRICS: The lyrics are almost indecipherable, but that doesn't stop the songs from being catchy and easy to sing along to. HIGHLIGHTS: Vasoline, Interstate Love Song, Pretty Penny.
