Ochurch25That album cover makes me feel sick.
Portishead break away from the constraints of the trip hop formula they perfected on their first 2 albums by adding a distinct Krautrock influence. Whilst this is unmistakably Portishead due to the distinctive vocals of Beth Gibbons there's now a drive on songs like Silence, We Carry on and Machine Gun that brings a new dimension to their music. In contrast the songs that are closer to their previous material suffer in comparison to songs like Mysterons, Glory Box and Cowboys.
Wow! Portishead meets Can. So refreshing to hear music this adventurous and exciting is still being conceived. Not as revolutionary as Dummy, but much more enjoyable.

Error Finn 01/16/2012 21:35It is neurotic in the extreme, with Beth Gibbons' voice almost uncomfortably high in the mix, and the paranoia reaches breaking point on closer 'Threads'.
Perfect hunting dark inventing amazing Portishead.
paladisiac 12/09/2011 18:30Darker sounding than their earlier two albums, which says a lot. I think of burial's last album when listening to this. "the rip" and "machine gun" are probably the best tracks, although the only so-so track is the acoustic number, "deep water".
What an amazing album!!
