It tops my list of most overrated albums of all time. Just no depth of feeling, clunky songwriting, repetitive vocals. So many better punk albums from The Damned, The Clash, Buzzcocks, Wire, The Saints, The Stranglers that get listed after this one because people are too lazy to look beyond the hype.

The Sex Pistols represented a kind of bridge between the Clash and the pop-punk rubbish masquerading as a challenge to the establishment of the kind seen on family entertainment show, Top Of The Pops. The formula of the early single releases, while initially dramatic on their release, soon wear thin. This album ultimately represents novelty cabaret value and empty sloganeering trumping substance. The Sex Pistols are little more than a punk version of the Beatles.

The essential punk album

It's something a punk album should never be, which is boring. Still, some of the songs (Holidays In The Sun, Anarchy In The UK) make it worthwhile. Though not only is the album mediocre, but you the lyrics are often so overly cynical that you get the impression the band don’t really mean it. That, combined with the fact that the Pistols were, to an extent, created by the record label for the sake of selling records by stirring controversy, ruins the mythology and importance surrounding this 39 minute record. Or does it make it even more significant? I don't know. I'd just listen The Clash instead.

Leaving aside the notion that the Sex Pistols were manipulated by Malcolm McLaren to gain media attention in base of being more annoying that what they really were, this album is a great collection of powerful punk songs that should deserve more recognition.

A pretentious piece of overrated garbage. I can name 30 punk albums that are better than this.

Sneering, blistering, raw, and uncompromising....perfect punk!!!! I wish they made another one.
