Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 3% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 77.2/100, a mean average of 76.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 77.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.9.

Solid record
Macetou muito nesse primeiro álbum! Que timbre lindo de voz!
El debut de Tracy Chapman es uno de los más destacados de la historia. Ninguno de sus discos posteriores está a la altura de este.
Like Mary Chapin-Carpenter and Rosanne Cash, Tracy Chapman was among many female folk singer-songwriters that emerged in the new corporate era who were literary and socially conscious.
It's fitting that her debut was released on the Elektra label, the same label that helped non-mainstream singer-songwriters like Mickey Newbury, Nanci Griffith and Sara Hickman.
This is a really fine debut, well worth your time.
A Side: Fast Car
B Side: Baby Can I Hold You

Remarkable songwriting on a debut album.

Brilliant debut album.
This album still sounds great today, it currently sits at BEA 501 Overall and 100% deserves to sit inside the top 500
I recall seeing Tracy Chapman live at the zenith of this albums mass popularity. It was at a large many thousand venue & we sat waiting for TC to appear & when she did it was just her, with one microphone, one acoustic guitar and a single chair for the entire gig ( in fact she sat down for the entire performance) . The ultimate intimate gig for a stadium. Needless to say the crowd sat spell bound and you could have heard a pin drop. Oh and Tracy barely spoke 2 words the whole night her shyness was palpable, she just sat on that chair & let her music do the talking. Whenever I hear this album it always takes me back to that night and one of the most unique concerts I ever had the privilege of attending. And yes this is a fantastic album.
God. You cannot listen to this woman sing and not be moved to near tears. Fast Car is on my ban list, it does not go on rotation when I shuffle my library. I just cant listen to that song without breaking down inside. Listen to this album at your own risk.
