Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. With every PJ Harvey album, I find myself thinking, "This doesn't sound like anything she's done before." Then, after I've listened to it a few times, it starts to make more sense as part of her catalog. So, too, with this one. It's technically a collaboration between Harvey and John Parish, and is billed as such. But given that Parish has been so involved with Harvey's previous albums, including a previous credited collaboration, I am not sure the distinction means much to anyone but Parish.
