Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.9/100, a mean average of 73.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 73.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.1.

The song on being frank is good. Ben folds, typically very good songs, but missing something that makes them great.
Ben Folds is honestly one of the most talented musicians I have ever seen, and I’m not just saying of this day and age, I’m saying ever. He doesn’t get nearly enough credit, but his music his absolutely incredible and his talent is even greater. This album picks right up where Ben Folds Five left off in 1999. It sounds exactly like they used to and the music is just awesome. The lyrics are pretty typical Ben Folds with some beautiful sincerity and some humor, never taking himself too seriously. There’s also a song with lyrics written by author Nick Hornby, who collaborated with Ben Folds on their album “Lonely Avenue" in which Hornby wrote the lyrics and Folds wrote the music. This album is absolutely worth getting immediately.
Like a lot of long-lost comebacks, ben folds five evoke the glory years of their past but don't really achieve those glory moments. They've lost that fire of rebellion and "f*ck all" of youth that can only be approximated in old age. Often times that approximation feels calculated and BFF are no exception. While the music's fine and pleasant and all, these songs have nothing on their early albums, including "reinhold messner", which wasn't the most altogether album itself but did include some great songs like "magic" and "mess". Without the youth "f*ck all" factor, only skimmed lightly like on "draw a crowd", this piano-bass-drums trio slips easy into adult contemporary pap, which is easy to do without a biting guitar lying around. There are no great songs on "the sound" (although "draw a crowd" comes close), only memories of an exceptional piano talent who once rocked the underground and now struggles to rock the suburbs.
