I grew up with Gorillaz (starting with Demon Days,) and working backwards has been strange. That album is definitely more accessible, but this isn't Demon Days. It's more ambitious, in that it isn't afraid to try all kinds of different sounds that still work with one another really well. Damon Albarn gets his hands everywhere. He mastered britpop and rock, he kicked it with Massive Attack, and now he made a kind of hip hop that no one else makes. Damn amazing.
Hattori300 12/09/2012 03:28Love this album, even if it isn´t as good as demon days. Re-hash, 5/4, tomorrow comes today, clint eastwood, 19-2000, rock the house are all great songs, but the rest doesnt do it for me.
sageamagoo 11/25/2012 14:38Not as remarkable as Demon Days, but it's a great album all the same. Its lack of polish makes it a whole other experience; one you may or may not like. Clint Eastwood, 5/4, and Latin Simone (¿Que Pasa Contigo?) still compete with Gorillaz' later stuff, while Sound Check (Gravity), Re-hash, and Rock The House create an atmosphere that makes listening to the album as a whole a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Still highly recommended, but Demon Days is a masterpiece.

I nice change of direction for Albarn. Blur was moving in this direction before Gorillaz, but in a bad way. This takes the best of what Albarn was trying to do with Blur, and succeeds. Great original sound. Well done.
Truly remarkable how Damon Albarn can go from Blur to this. Much like Radiohead, he was able to blend genres to create a new, attention-getting sound. Most kids from my generation can recite the lyrics to Clint Eastwood with ease, and reasonably so. Great debut.
